Has any one ever used the hinge rebuild kit for the 54 Chevy Truck? If so how hard is this to do? Do you have to have any special tool? Also I have found a parts supplier that sell remanufactered hinges-any ideas or comments?

RHuddle56,

I have used two kind of hinge rebuild "kits". Both were fairly straight forward operations.

1. Use an oversize hinge pin and drill out the hole (NAPA had these).

2. Drill out the hinge pin hole at the top and bottom for brass bushings. I think original diameter hinges are still used in these kits (Chevy Duty had these).

Here is an article on rebuilding hinges:

I used a cheap drill press and had to ask a friend to press out the old pins (I do not have a hydraulic press).

Be sure to use new "hold open" springs.

Here is a write-up on replacing springs:

Made it much easier to align the doors and latches.

The Master Parts Manual says the pins (diameters and lengths) and hinges are different for 47-54 COE vs all other trucks.

This ain't hinges, but it's related to getting a decent closing on your doors ... my experience installing new Door Latches & Strikers

You can buy hinge kits by size at the local FLAPS in most locals.
Find one the size you need, cut it off for length and get to it.

Make sure your hinges are trued up first.
Find the worst offending hinge for wallow and find the smallest size drill bit needed to clean it up (back to true cylindrical form).
Then see what the next closest Pin kit is.
Drill all the hinges out to the new spec and have fun.
