That manifold came from 64-65 327 in in chevy cars & vettes. It had a Carter WCFB carb. 250 HP.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

thanks for the info. i replaced the valve cover gaskets today (bad leaks). the cylinder head casting number is 3795896. i've seen were this casting number is referenced as both a 283 and 327. it seems that i need to either rebuild the carter carb or just replace it. does anyone know of a reputable carb shop and/or what would be the best carb to replace my existing one. as stated in other posts, i'm a new guy to this and would appreciate any feedback to help clarify exactly what i have here.

thanks...jeff

Jeff, there is a flat section on the passenger side front of motor where block meets head. There is a number with suffix letters stamped on it. Wire brush that pad and post the numbers and letters. Read the pad carefully with a good light at different angles. This is how you tell what the motor/block is. Other parts can be added over the years and their casting numbers can corroborate the "Serial no." or prove parts are replacement.

Best place to rebuild that carb is at your house. Buy a kit, take carb apart while taking pics and writing down thoughts. Keep track of parts removed, clean the reusable parts in carb cleaner. Put it back together carefully and set float per instruction. There are Youtube's for this carb as well as text online.
We all had a first carb rebuild. As long as you are clean, careful, search and are motivated you will do fine. Kits are $25, gal of cleaner $20.

Jeff,
If you want to know what engine you have, look on the drivers side of the engine. Behind the head cast into the block is a 6 or 7 digit number, may need to spray carb/brake cleaner on it to see it. Wright the number down and then google mortec and look at engine casting numbers.

thanks for the info. just checked it out and it's 3849852, so it's a 283. that casting number is a pain-in-the-neck to get to, not to mention the 50 years of freaking grime!!! i think the manifolds, cylinder heads, and carb came off a 327...wish they changed out the whole motor!!! oh well...

thanks again for the help...jeff

I said it was an AFB. That is wrong. I removed that statement so that this post is meaningful thanks to Wrenchbender and ron.

Your block usually came with the 283 power pack heads with either a 2 bbl (Impala) or 4 bbl carb (SS). To ID them, look at the front edge, in the middle will be a raised area with a single point in the center. Those are 283 power packs. A 327 head would have the same raised area and have 2 humps instead of a single point (300 and up HP). It wasn't uncommon for somebody to want more power to remove the power pack heads and replace them with 327 double hump (or camel hump) heads and add the 4bbl carb, which is what it looks like somebody did.
