The 409 will certainly fit in your '71 model. You have more than enough room. You may run into other issues- with brackets, exhaust, etc., but nothing you can't work out. Good luck!

Sounds like it will be time for the camera to take some pics for you to share with us! grin

409/348's most likely came in some of those trucks.

I had a 68 with a 396 and I think the 409's were in the earlier trucks. The 71 and 72 had 402 big blocks which were .030 over 396 blocks. I have wondered if a glitch in casting or boring led to these engines. The short story is all these trucks had a bb option so it should fit. The 409 truck block with the taller deck height is sought after by hot rodders.

Sounds interesting! As I recall, the 348-409 engines were last used in the 1962 production year, so anything 1963 or later should be the traditional small or big block Chevy.

I've always liked the 348-409 "W" head motors, as they aren't that common. It should make for a great conversation starter for sure!

The 348 went to '61, the 409 went to mid-'65 in Passenger. Both the 348 and 409 were used until '66 in HD trucks.

I put a 348 in my '48 p/u with no problems and yours should have more room
