Kansas City Confidential is a cool noir crime film from 1952 that features a real nice Advanced Design Chevy Panel Truck 1/2 ton with sergeant stripes and also a nifty 1 ton GMC panel truck with port holes and a unique cattle guard. The movie stars Lee Van Cleef of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and For A Few Dollars More.

Kansas City Confidential (1952) [Film Noir] Deluxe Panel appears at 11:11 into movie.

Boy, that was a wide stripe around the beltline. I figure Tim or Brad will weigh in on this shots!

Thanks for posting. Movie not bad.

I also thought the beltline pin stripe looked wider than stock.
Maybe that is stock?

The doors have Ventipanes. Truck must be a 1951 or 1952, Date of film 1952.

Stovebolt Tech Tip: Advance Design Spotting Guide

3. Door Windows
1947.2 -1950
The first years of the Series had single-piece door glass.

1951 - 1955.1
For the 1951 model year through the end of the series in 1955, the AD trucks featured "Ventipanes" -- door vent windows.
This feature replaced the side cowl vent (see next section).

4. Side Cowl Vent
1947.2 -1950
The '47-'50 AD trucks sport a side cowl vent in addition to the top cowl vent. The top cowl vent is found on all Advance Design trucks.

1951 - 1955.1
For 1951, the side cowl vent was eliminated and its function replaced by the ventipanes (discussed above)

We have seen beltline and wheel stripes ranging from about 1/8" wide to about 3/16" wide.

The stripes were painted by hand - there was no "stock width".

I'll capture and post the images that jorb refers to in the original post in this thread.

I'd bet 1951 panel

- ventipane side window was introduced in 1951
- no chrome/stainless in 1952/1953 (rear bumper looks to be chrome; SS spears)
- movie was shown in 1952

Did they use a brush or roller? I would love to get a pin stripe roller.

Was the GMC kind of an early equivalent of a SWAT-team rig?

Or did the bad guys drive it?

The GMC is an armored car. The Chevy is a florist delivery truck. The armored car is robbed by guys driving a duplicate of the florist Chevy, thus placing suspicion on the real florist truck driver.

After some observation there seems to be two different Deluxe Panel Trucks.
The 1st Deluxe Panel truck does not have any rear doors window stainless steel moulding. At 11:12 into film.
The 2nd Deluxe Panel truck has rear doors window stainless steel moulding. At 12:43 into film.

I thought maybe they used one Deluxe Panel truck by editing the film.
I guess Not.
I don't think the director of the film thought anyone would notice.
Some scenes show that, the robbers and the flower delivery man were driving both trucks.

Wow. You're right. Great catch! Good guy drives the flower truck with SS window mouldings the day previous to the robbery. Then he's driving the one without SS moulding the day of the robbery and the bad guys are driving the one with SS mouldings.

Later when they are showing the get away, the bad guys are in the one without SS window mouldings. When the "framed" good guy is stopped after the robbery, he's back in the truck with SS mouldings.

Probably a bit confusing if you haven't seen the movie...

Bob

Typically, for factory work, a roller. A Beugler Striper can still be had for about $100. I can loan you mine if you have some work to do.

I think JIm Carter sells an A-D pinstriping sheet that says they were brush painted.

We took the amateur route and brush-painted using pin-striping tape.
