Does anyone have the part number for the K&N air filter element that fits the original air cleaner assembly on the 1947-1954 Chevrolet truck? The air cleaner I am referring to is what I call the dry type filter assembly, or the one the original filter was soaked in oil prior to installation.

The only one I know that is being reproduced is from Jim Carter. The one I use that looks more modern (works better too) is a NAPA 2373. If its original look you are going for:

If you have the old filter, the K&N site has a great dimensional search feature to find a close match. I recently used it to find a match to convert the oil bath filter to a paper element type while retaining the original exterior look. I have photos etc if anyone is interested. It takes some surgery but works out really well.

Is this what you're looking for Tim?

Only problem is it sits the top cover a little to high to put
the nut/clip on so you have to work out a way of extending
the center stud.
In my case, I just took a piece of hex stock and machined
a female to male adapter:

Denny's idea is the way to go. The way I did it is always the 'other way' which is drill out the existing stud but use a tap drill and drill for a 10-32 tap. Then turn a longer screw from underneath clear up until the head is flush, then since I do not trust that flimsy metal to keep the screw in, put a 10-32 square nut over the top to sandwich it all together so there is no chance of the screw or hardware dropping down into your precious engine. I haven't checked McMaster-Carr to see if they have the standoffs that Denny made by hand that would fit and be long enough, but its a possibility. They surprise me a lot.

Denny,

That is exactly what I was looking for. Deve, thank you also for the NAPA part number. Either stud stand off or using a longer 10/32 screw will work. Have some work to clean and refinish the air cleaner assembly, then I will decide on the stud stand off or the longer screw.

Think I have found the K&N part number and the corresponding Accel Kool Blue filter number. K&N part# E-3180, Kool Blue part # KR1117. These filters are 6" O.D. x 4.5" I.D. x 1.75" high. These filters are listed for use on the Triumph Herald from 1961-1970. Not sure if it will fit the original Chevrolet dry style air cleaner until I receive it, but it looks real close. Will update once I get the air cleaner assembly.

How quick do those lawn mower filter elements last before they clog up and choke the engine?
I am guessing that the original oil covered mesh ones breath better than new style paper ones, even when dirty. They probably let more dirt in than the paper ones however.

Ran mine from 2005 to 2009, that was about seven or eight
thousand miles. Never had a trouble with mine, couldn't
tell it form the one that was in there.
If you spread that filter element out flat I think you'd be
surprised at just how much surface area that is in one. I'm only
running on paved roads Carl, just an occasional trip down the
gravel when I took my trip to the recycling center every
other week.

The reason I used and adapter was I'm a 95% purist and dint
want to alter my carb. the principal that I try to practice
is, "Do no harm"

I can't imagine the proper standoff not being there for you. I do not remember the size of the original stud. I thought it was 10-32 but not sure. They have them as long as 3 inches. The trick would be getting just the right length.

Good thinking as usual Denny!

Well I'll be danged, if I'd have known McMaster had those I
wouldn't have bought the hex stock and made my own.
Thanks for digging that out of their catalog Deve.

Per my earlier post in this thread, I have some photos of what I did. You may have a different style oil bath. PM me if you would like.
I recently wrote this up as a how-to and sent in to this site for a possible tech-tip, now awaiting a response.

Nhluvstruck:

I'd be interested in seeing some pics of what you did if you don't mind posting.

Also, the specs of the element you used.

Having trouble with p-bucket now, will try to post tonite.
The KN number is E-4583, but mods are needed. I heard back from the forum moderator and they are looking at my info for a possible tech tip. Based on responses I have gotten, seems like there is some demand!

The K&N air filter element I was referring to was the one that will fit the original AD truck dry element air cleaner. Not sure on the part number for converting the oil bath air cleaner?

The oil bath number is the one I quoted above E4583 for that particular style. You can use the KN site to find a standard paper element cross reference. I will put up a fresh thread later with my photo links

The K&N part number E-3180 was the ticket. The filter fit in the dry element air cleaner assembly perfectly. Will have to modify the center stud to make a little taller. Think I will go with Denny's idea of a stud coupler so I don't have to modify the original air cleaner assembly.
