The windshield I'm attempting to install {both sides} seem like they are too large? Thanks for your time. | | | | Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 159 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 159 | Just checked the pieces out of my 51 3100. 15 1/4. X. 25 1/2. My glass measures 25&3/4 in. on each side. So I've got an extra 1/2 inch to get in the opening. Can that be done??? Anyone had this problem before? Thanks for your help. | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,185 Moderator | Moderator Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,185 | My glass is also 25 1/2, but it's 15 1/5 high at the highest point. | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 306 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 306 | ** 1953 Panel ** Have you already installed your windshield glass? I was able to get both sides of the windshield glass installed {twice} but the polished stainless steel trim is pushed out in the process. Once the glass and seal are installed there's no way your going to get the trim back in the correct position. I'll try again when the temp. is somewhat comfortable. | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,185 Moderator | Moderator Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,185 | My panel doesn't have stainless trim. My glass is in, we used a watery lubricant, was still difficult. | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 306 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 306 | * 1953 panel* Do remember where you got your glass? I might be ahead of the game by just getting glass from another source. If there is someone near you with an original that is out, have them trace it on butcher paper and mail it to you.
Then take it to your local glass shop
I believe J. C. Sells paper patterns for that purpose.

If you can get a good pattern of the original cutting a !/4" or so off the end is possible. Also you could ask the shop to seam (bevel) the edges if they aren't already. If the edge isn't seamed it will hang up on the rubber during the rope-in, making the job harder. Try not to get too much lube in the moulding groove and use lots of masking tape over the moulding to help hold it in place. the tape can be pulled out after everythings together. Murphys OIl Soap is a old trick for lubing to rubber lip that pulls over the pinchweld. It cleans up easy and won't dry out too fast like silicone spray. Hope this helps. They are quite curved and top and bottom and spayed on the sides so you definitely need a template. I had mine cut at a local glass for $100 after I cracked the originals trying to get them out. Note: that is $100 Canadian so you can probably get them down there for $20 :-)
The chrome trim does not appear to have any affect on the rubber as I changed mine from black rubber to chrome insets without a problem. I used the string method and they popped in quite nicely. If you can't find what you need I can trace them and mail you a set. It looks like it's not a factory glass but I'm not sure. | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 Renaissance Man | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 | What is recommended today for sealant type and location of placement of this sealant? The Factory Assembly Manual has directions, but I have trouble deciphering them, and sealants have changed since then. Carl
