The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline My '3 On Tree' won't shift into reverse.

Hi-
I just adopted a decent '63 stepside pickup and the column shifter won't cooperate...it won't go into reverse. It feels overall tight and resistant rather than lose.

It goes in 1st and second.
Any tricks I should know before diving into this linkage???

First, take a brush and some good & soapy water to the entire length of the shifting linkage & clean it up.

Any grinding noise? Try stopping before attempting reverse... ?? just kidding!
Comedy isn't my strong point.

If the soap trick doesn't work (which it should!), I'd consider attempting the shift under hood, with and without the linkage hooked up to column shifter. This would be attempt to isolate the binding culprit. The more worn out the linkage, the more unforgiving of sloppy shifts to the point where it may simply refuse the desired shift entirely.

For what it is worth I just picked up a 63' and one of my first projects is squaring away the TOTT. I have some photos from a guy named Jay of his tear down I can share. Thanks. Mine doesn't have that two bolt piece. I saw a video where a guy rotated by whacking that thing. I'm not sure how I'll rotate it - I'll try something else.
