Before I started tearing into my 49 1/2 ton, I noticed that there was a hairline crack in the paint on both sides at the base of the windshield pillars (about 1" long from the door jam out). I know this is stress related where the cab parts were welded and then soldered. With the paint off, the cracks are no longer visible but I know the weakness is still there. Will opening the area up into a small "V" and refinishing with a quality filler be good enough? I'm thinking the filler would be more flexible than the solder was.
Thanks

The problem with solder is that once it cracks the crack will propagate. I would think that you would want to re-melt the solder to get rid of the cracks. Solder is actually fairly ductile and shouldn't crack as long as it was heated adequately when it was installed.

If you are talking about the solder joint area where the lower cowl joins in, you pretty much need to remove the solder with a torch. It comes off pretty easily. I would be wondering why it cracked. It means that the lapp joint underneath has been flexed.

The stress cracks in the trucks I have seen are not in the solder joint area, they are at the base of the windshield pillar right at the location of the upper crease in the belly band.
