HI All
I am looking at a 46 Stovebolt currently and I saw a couple of images that gave me pause. ( I will try to get the photobucket links in this post).

One image shows what I believe is the exit of the fuel tank underneath the truck and going immediately into a filter.
The second image shows the fuel line to the carb and it has what appear to be 2 filters in line to the carb, for a total of 3 fuel filters. The first filter is before the pump, and the last two are after the pump, so this makes a little sense, but I have some pause here because of the following:
1) In the image out of the bottom, the line coming out is in an area that looks like some kind of white or yellow sealer was used, or is some kind of sealer to “fix” a leak? — your thoughts would be welcome here!

2) Why 2 fuel filters in line right before the carb? — I have never seen that on any vehicle. The second filter almost looks like a water trap
My fear is that the fuel tank is rusted out and is sending lots of little pieces to the engine and this was an attempt to stop that problem. Is a worse case possible here where the tank sent all kinds of garbage to the engine and destroyed the cylinder finish since they would be sucked into the combustion chamber?
I do like the fact the owner swapped in a newer 235, but I also have now discovered that the full oil pressure 235’s only emerged after 1955 — I am assuming there is an engine serial or identifier that could lead me to decode the year — any help on where this would be on the engine?

Also, for those of you familiar with the Art Deco series ( 41 — 46 ) — Any suggestions as to what else your experience suggests I look for? — I am not new to old vehicles, as I owned a 70 Road Runner for a long time and miss wrenching on an old flame — I have also always liked old pickups and the one I am looking at is singing her siren song
I will try the photobucket URL below — hope it works

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Previous owner was being very careful. That's a good thing. Your speculation of crud in the tank is probably correct if it is the original tank. As for the white stuff I have no guess beyond your speculation that it is a sealer of some sort. Good luck with your project.

I have put filters in those locations after having a tank cleaned and sealed. So, nothing to be alarmed about, IMO.

I used a white sealer (now prefer red) on my 41 tank many years ago. Like Martin said, if it's the original tank, that's probably what it is.

I don't like messing around with cleaning and sealing tanks any more. If you can get a replacement (and I think you can), I think it will save you time and $ in the long run.

The 2 filters appear to be the see-thru type. Look at the first one. If there's much in the tank it will have solids showing in the filter. Hard to tell from the photo but they appear clear.

The one your calling a water trap is actually the factory sediment bowl type filter.
