hello. i'm a newbie when it comes to these cool old trucks. i just purchased a 65 c10 stepside with a 283 about a week ago. it's been sitting for almost 15 years so i'm going to make an attempt to resuscitate her. i'd like to get some additional information with the "custom" sail panel. what is the difference between a base and custom? i've seen the fleet side custom with the side molding, but can't find any info on the stepside.

thanks for your expertise...jc

Now that you mention it I don't recall seeing a stepside with the custom trim. It will be interesting to see what the experts say about this subject.

Step sides did not have optional bed trim - Only the fleet side bed had the option. Otherwise:
Custom options included; Appearance options (432), Comfort options (433), and Chrome options (393). Look at data card for RPO numbers.
Appearance; Bright metal radiator grill, windshield molding, rear trim plates (sails), horn ring, chrome trimmed instr panel knobs, 2-tone box door and 2-tone door panels.
Comfort; Driver side arm rest, passenger sunshade, full depth seat, right door lock, insulation, chromed cigar lighter.
Chrome; Front bumper, hub caps.
Bed trim, rear bumper and other options also available.
Source; GM heritage.

thanks hambone. that's a lot of information. i think i remember someone on here stating the side trim was available only on the front half of the truck, but not the bed. i've been thinking about getting a build sheet on the truck just to see what's been added or removed over the last 50 years. then my cheap side kicks in...that's $50 for a sheet of paper that isn't really value-added, especially since the truck is going to quickly drain the 'ol bank account. has anyone purchased a build sheet and do you think it was worth the $$$?

looking a little closer at the engine, it's a 283 with a 327 intake with a carter 4 bbl carb. going to start tearing it down this weekend!!!

As Hambone states the bed didn't get any of the trim or two tone paint in the trim that we are used to seeing on fleetsides. But the custom cab option was certainly available, including sail panel trim, on the step sides.

Custom cab two tone body side trim looks silly on a stepside from the factory, they just stop the trim on the cab....

On my '65 I decided to take off where the factory stopped and installed my own version of "custom" custom cab trim on my step side... and included it on the step side bed too. I basically bought a used set of custom cab long bed fleetside trim and then modified the pieces to fit.

Here are a couple photo's. More details can be found by following the link in my signature line below:
