I have a 1938 water pump here for overhaul , I have a kit with bearing and seal , what I wish to know , is , where the thrust washer (behind the seal) runs against the pump housing , is that contact surface supposed to be very smooth ? It is pitted from rust and a bit grooved from wear .

Should I machine the face where the thrust washer contacts ?

Thanks Dave , that is a great set of pics . It clearly shows that I have the 2nd type for 1938. The shop manual overhaul only shows the 1st type details.

Didn't know you could overhaul these pumps. Dusty where did you get your kit?

Update .

I machined the seal face a little , just to clean it up , best I could , used a Lada bearing and seal kit , had to hone the impeller and fan hub bores a few thou' (chev parts imperial Lada parts metric) and got it all back together. Seems ok smile
