Stripped my inner fenders and discovered more cracks to fix. Man oh man do these old trucks have a lot of metal work to do. And repair, discover, repair, discover.... Will it ever end?!

Adjusted my valves today... Now sounds more like an engine should and less like a riveting gun! Used vacuum gauge to set the timing and carburetor... nice. Don't think the rocker oiler tube is properly installed. Will have to do some studying before messing with it.

OK... after "Googling" a zillion pictures, I finally figured out that the discharge tube which loops over the top of the rocker and drains (overflow?) was completely out of position and not connected to anything. I had to use a screwdriver to pry it out from between the springs and the rocker arm. Checked it to make sure it wasn't plugged, then inserted it into the oiler and into correct orientation.

Probably a good idea Alvin. I saw Brothers had them on sale a while back - about $199 plus a switch.

Joe, if you decide to go electric, in my humble opinion you should consider up-grading to a 12 volt system. If you do change to 12 volt, I also would advise you to check with some of the guys in the electrical forum for what set-up they recommend. I bought mine from LMC 6 or 7 years ago and my recollection is a bit cloudy but I remember I regretted the wiper system I bought. Mine is a china made wiper system and as usual with China took some modification to fit. I found out later there was an American made wiper that was superior. Check with that forum and see what they have to say. Good luck!

Thanks Jim, for now I think i'm committed to 6 V. I will however check further into some manufacturers. I appreciate the insight.

After some mocking from my fellow bolters I sold my used tailgate and bought some new parts online. Then dismounted some tires and installed the new white walls on the cleaned and primered wheels. Wheels ready for paint!

Robert, did you say you upgraded wipers to the specialty power windows? I don't understand. You got wipers or power windows? Also I missed your pics; where did they go?

Welded in another patch on my LR fender.
I only have 30 hours in it and it's still not done.
Good thing my labor is free, or this would be the most expensive fender ever. wink

My Suburban is ready to go to NC. We'll be leaving at around 9am on Tues; meeting my wife in VA tomorrow evening, about 60 miles from the Bay Bridge-Tunnel. We'll be in Jarvisburg, NC by noon on Wednesday.

All three trucks will be in NC.
Our 4-month old granddaughter (and our daughter and her husband) are 16 miles away from our NC home.

I'll post a photo of all three trucks in their "new" bays.

Simple stuff, but I finally replaced the choke cable on my '50. The previous owner had disconnected the original and left it in the dash. He had added one of the cheap parts store cables and had it mounted pointing down in the bottom lip of the dash. It was VERY difficult to work, and resulted in the truck being hard to cold-start due to the choke not closing all the way. I put a new OE style item from The Filling Station in the original location, lubed with the graphite powder for Pinewood Derby axles. It's super smooth and easy to work. I drove it last weekend, and parked it all week. Yesterday it was chilly (for Houston) and the truck had been sitting a week- with a properly functioning choke, it started after only a couple revolutions of the starter. New choke should've been the first or second thing I did after buying the truck! Sometimes the simplest things can make me happy...

I got both headlights to work at the same time, finally. High beam & low beam shine as designed. Now, however, only the driver side parking lamp illuminates... And I'm still trying to get a single rear stoplight/taillight to function with a wiring harness rigged for turn signals on two rear lights.

That stoplight functioning is all that's keeping me from being legal to drive on the road.

And... now we're road legal! The above post seems like forever ago. I'm running the original single taillight/stop lamp on a skeleton rear frame until I get the bed installed. All the lights function properly. I may end up using the original hood emblem for a while & use that (new emblem cost) $200 for getting the bed finished for install. It is pictured in the link below if anyone cares to comment. It's pitted like a champ.

Pictures of my current set-up.

I don't have the door windows, the grille, the bed, the rear bumper, or the passenger side door handle installed yet. We do have a blast driving it. We have some decent grade hills here, so my son & I have been driving a good bit "to let the engine build up its wind". Or that's what we told his momma so we could slide out of the family gathering early... wink

Brad

And for the front bumper pictures: when I got my wife to help me put the front bumper on, I had the brackets positioned wrong... (of course it happened then)

I went ahead & installed the hood emblem after I found a new emblem gasket. The emblem stands out as 'not new', but it looks better than the bare hood did.

Pictures. One day, a new chrome emblem will definitely pop against that dark blue.

In an attempt to record my most productive day working on the truck - I secured two 5/16"-18 x 3/4" cap screws on the front fender braces.

One thing off the to-do list...

Tank was empty so put in 3 gallons of fresh petrol. Still wouldn't start. Wasn't getting fuel. Replaced the old inline fuel filter. Cranked right up & ran like a champ. Drove it onto the front lawn then installed blowup Santa behind the wheel. Put a wreath on the door. Will fill the bed with a big stack of presents & it will be "Santa's Express Delivery " & part of my annual Christmas decorations.

Received a late model spare tire hoist this week. Will install in lieu of "rare as chicken lips" original spare tire carrier. Also, got the material needed to fabricate a finger strainer to eliminate fuel line plugging at tank outlet.

Well the 'ol '65 went bbrrr one time and then ' click click click' with the no cranky action.

Put the volt meter on it and it is reading 12.3 or so...

I have the battery charger on it, so I will see if it will crank or not and what the alternator reads, etc..

old trucks are fun.

After much effort, I completed my rear suspension replacement project, with new leaf springs, new U bolts, new shackles and new pins. Much thanks to everyone here who helped this new guy, answering my newbie questions and keeping me moving when I got stuck. Also thanks to Jim Carter truck parts, who seems to be the only supplier that knew that the 55.1 has different leaf springs than the earlier versions. Now to tackle the gas tank replacement project!
