The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Zero Rust / POR 15 test results

Len Stuart, the proprietor at www.autobodystore.com posted a message on the bulletin board, with photos yesterday, showing the results of a 16 month test of the 2 products on a salt water fishing boat. It was a set of circumstances for acceleration of failure. I do the same thing in the elements on the Oregon coast. It's quite an incubator. Like the salt spray test cabinet with everything else thrown in.

Anyway,thought you all would like to see it as there seems to be a fair amount of discussion on the topic of rust control. It's not everyday you can see real world test results like this.

I think, as much as anything, Len was trying to prove to himself that the product he had begun to put his credentials behind (ZR) did, in fact, do the job. This result is not offered to down grade the performnce of POR 15 but merely to show the viability of ZR. It's hard to show direction with only one stake in the ground.....

Neat site! Is that a 250 Chev or a **** 300 in that boat? Or some kind of diesel? ON the paint...thought you didn't need a primer when using the top coat and maybe it is better not to. thought the paint needed to turn the rust to some other compound and stick to it to work. No?

Good call -- but the folks at Zero Rust had worked with us a while back on a few Tech Tips on Rust. We previously had some good intel on the POR 15 stuff, too. So, this looks like a good thing to show an independent study of the two. Most 'Bolters were familiar with POR 15 ... wanted to give the ZR folks a chance to "show their stuff."

As we all know, Rust is the cancer to our old Stovebolts ... so this is good info. Bill Irish / Zero Rust has sponsored previous newsletters (remember when we use to do them and email them out) and also donated a good stash of ZR for the It Ran contest.

So ... is otay!

Great info Bruce!

Just to clarify a couple points, Len's test included use of Rass-O-Nil, a rust converter that he strongly advocates/uses. Neither POR nor ZR are converters, that is, neither changes the structure of the rusty metal or, for that matter, the white metal blasted surface they might be applied to. In ZR's case, ZR IS the primer AND the topcoat (unless you top it with something else for esthetic reasons) and this can be done without jumping through another process/product.
In our experience, there is no need to use the Rass prior to coating with ZR, in fact and again based on our observations, 9 times out of ten, it tends to interfere with the job ZR is designed to and actually does, ALL BY ITSELF. There are others who swear by Rass and we'd be the last to pour cold water on their experience and advocacy. Forgive me, but "it's whatever floats your boat" -ouch - no pun intended.
