Also wondering was the firewall the same color as the body on the two tone trucks or black? Was the gas tank goose neck painted the same color as the body or black? Original color of the truck was black, doing a color change to swift red & black. Trying to be period correct as possible. Thanks for all your help. | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 270 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 270 | My experience has been that the firewall is the same color as the body. Gas tank? not certain. | | | | Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 182 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 182 | Fuel filler neck should be body color as well. | | | | Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 18 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 18 | Thanks folks, any idea on the interior color. I've heard hammer brown, to tan. | | | | Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 182 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 182 | The 1940 to 1946 Chevrolet truck interiors were painted a metallic beige color. This paint had a sort of "fisheye" appearance, but unlike modern hammered paint, it had no appreciable texture.
The paint that Jim Carter sells for these trucks turns out to be Hammerite Bronze, an off-the-shelf product available elsewhere cheaper. The color is quite close to the original color, but the color variation and texture is far more pronounced than that of the original paint.
I am ambivalent on whether modern hammered paint gives a more original appearance than regular non-hammered paint. I painted the interior of my 41 pickup with the Hammerite Bronze, but wouldn't do it again because of the difficulty in applying the paint. | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 52 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 52 | Not to hijack, but it's a question in the same vein as the OP. For truck with a painted grill what color was the grill painted? I've seen them painted to match the hood/cab, painted to match the fenders/running boards, and painted a sort of cream color? | | | | Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 182 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 182 | Your truck is a '46? 1946 trucks were only available with a chrome grille. Some people paint them due to the high cost of chrome work, despite the fact that the big chrome grille is perhaps the focal point of these trucks.
Some of the trucks made in 1942 and 1945 had light gray painted grilles instead of chrome. | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 52 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 52 | Yes, my truck is a '46, and I know a painted grill isn't 'correct' but I was wondering what color the grill was on trucks with a factory painted grill. | | |
