Howdy. I have a question about the rearend and tranny I have. I bought a 60's rear out of a suburban, it has 3.54 gears and limited slip diff. I also have a New Process Gear trans to go in with it. Can anyone tell me if this would work well with my 235 that's in the truck?
Just wanted to ask you gurus before I start putting this together.
Thanks,
Tim
Also, the rear has a metal tag on it that says 46-13 3.54. Just wondering what the first set of numbers are? The last ones are the gearing I take it.
Thanks if anyone knows.

46-13 3.54 - Maybe this? - just a WAG

46 teeth on the ring gear & 13 teeth on the pinion gear gives you 3.54

You could try searching through
GM Vehicle Information Kits: for that rearend number.
Chevrolet Trucks (All Models Not Listed Below) click on Show

Tim, is that for GMC? I'm not seeing a 3.55 option for a Chevrolet for '64 and '65, or at least not on the Heritage site.

Bill,

I might have read this incorrectly. It is an odd site to peruse (and I am not up on model numbers for those years):
64-65 GM rear ends

I think I see where you got mixed up, the 3.55 listing is for an R10. That would be a Corvair 95.
jorb, I really only checked Trucks, and skipped the El Camino since its driveline is Passenger and does not interchange.
Olememphis51, is there any chance you could post a few pics of the rear you have? It's possible it may not be a Chevrolet axle.

Longbox, I can get some pics but have to figure out how to post them. Am kind of surprised this might not be a chevy rear.

Given the ratio that's in it, and that it's a Posi, I'm thinking it might be a Spicer, which was used in GMCs. Some late '60s and early '70s Chevrolets with the 396/402 also used Spicers with that ratio. I guess what I mean is not so much that it might not be a stock rear for a Suburban, but more that it might not be a Chevrolet manufactured rear. I just feel it might be beneficial to ID it so you get the proper parts for it (seals/gaskets/bearings) should you need them.

Ok LONGBOX55, I looked at the gears closely and it has 9 18 63 DANA 18437 A3D83 46-13 stamped on the big ring. It's 62 in. from face to face.
The A883 trans has a ratio of 3.09 first/1.67 second/1.00 third/.73 fourth, so like an overdrive. What I'm wondering about, will this be ok with the 3.54 rear?
I dont even know if it will mate up with my stock bell housing.

Having "DANA" stamped on the ring gear pretty much tell me what the diff is, it is a Spicer (Spicer and Dana are the same company). You'll want to look around on the housing, possibly on the center section near the cover on one side or the other, or on the top of the snout above the pinion, for a cast number. Most likely either a "44" or "60". That will be the model of the differential. Both are good axles, the 44 being equivalent to the GM 10 bolt, the 60 a little stronger than a GM 12 bolt.
As far as the gearing goes, if you don't go too big on tire diameter, you'll probably be ok. If the transmission came from a Chevrolet, I believe that the bolt pattern is the same.

Thankyou, it is a 44 and I dont know about the motor pulling that 3.54 gear in .73 overdrive. A 3.90 rear might be better for this trans.
