I have just recently bought a '51 3100 and I've been taking it apart while acquiring parts for the re-assembly. I am going to move the body with a nice patina (and dents and scrapes) to a new TCI chassis with an engine swap as well.

I now have the entire rolling chassis separated which appears to be generally complete and original including the brakes, steering, suspension, rear end, driveshaft, trans w/floor shifter and the brakes lines, cables, etc. plus the running board brackets and probably a bunch of other good parts.

There is a GMC straight 6 in the chassis that replaced the Chevy at some time. The starter, carb, and distributor cap and wires are gone but otherwise is complete. There are four wheels with decent tires.

Now what? I'm not sure if this is worth a little or a lot or what the best approach is to sell or dispose of it. I would greatly prefer that it be used vs. scrapped but I am new to these old trucks and just don't know the market.

I would be interested in trading - I could use running boards, a tailgate, a hood latch panel, etc.

Thoughts or suggestions on the best approach and what this might be worth?

Thanks!
Scott

Unless it has all new moving parts, new brakes and lines, fresh rebuilt engine, transmission, and rear end, it will not be an easy sell. It is expensive to make everything like new. Most people are going the other way, just as you are, in upgrading to after market chassis.
DO NOT scrap it! There are many out there looking for parts. I'm sure that you will soon hear from them.

Scott,

What is the Engine Serial Number - pressed into the block to the rear of the distributor. A 270 or 302 GMC engine has good value.

After you make 4-5 posts, you will be able to post Parts for Sale ads and Parts Wanted ads. You have to post prices for sales, but you can also indicate that you are willing to trade for certain parts.

Looks like 6107326. It's actually on the left side under the intake/exhaust manifolds. Just above it is: GMC 6 And to the front of the block, same side, is 899

Any of these numbers help? I took some pics but don't see how to post them. I may need more posts first?

The owners don't allow posting pictures in the forum, because we have members from all over the world, and some of them have very slow connections. However, you can upload pics to one of the picture places, like PhotoBucket or Google and then post a link to the pics.

The link should look like this:

If there is no code in the ledge in the block to the rear of where the distributor goes into the block, either the code was ground off, or it is a factory replacement block which comes with no code.

The SN is stamped on the flat machined surface on the RIGHT side, rear of the block just behind the distributor. First 3 numbers are displacement. Sometimes rebuilders stamp a letter in front of the numbers.

228 cu in GMC engine
A good engine, but a small engine.
Worth maybe a few hundred dollars, but not highly sought after
