I had to cut a weld to get the bedsides separate from the rear rool pan which was all bent-up. Just curious what everybody has done at re-assembly time - reweld and paint the whole bed as a unit after - or paint the pieces separate and just bolt them back together ? I am afraid the bolts may allow wiggling, but painting the whole assembly seems like it would be a pain. Ideas?

Are you talking about the rear sill? You can buy a replacement if that is what you are talking about. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 110 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 110 | I grind the weld, paint all the parts and bolt them together, making all the checks to make sure the tail gate will fit right and then scrape the paint at the weld and tack weld the spots with my wire welder. Then use low pressure to touch-up the welds. Or you could use a small brush. The spots are in an area that isn't noticable anyway. You do need these welds or the bed sides will slip and get wider at the top. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice, I agree I think the welds are important and your plan sounds good.
Houston54, I guess I'm learning terminology, but the part I'm talking about is the rear cross-sill - the part that holds the bedsides toegther in the back. It's also the part taht the bottom of the tailgate touches. | | |
