I have an original 40, and the rear axle does not have an axle vent. After thoroughly inspected by several people, it looks like one never existed... I wonder why? Anyone else have one on theirs. Was it special or was it just overlooked at the factory? It does have the optional 4.55 gears

If it had a torque tube, there would have been a vent in the tube.

Look half way up the torque tube.

Anytime I've had gear oil running out by the wheels the axle seals and or axle bearings were bad. Is the rearend differential housing over full?

Ok so I have found this axle vent on the torque tube like 68dave said but nxt question (this maybe a dumb question) but how do I replace it? Also is this like a generic part that i can pick up from my local parts house where it fits 100000's of vehicle or is this a special part I'll have to get at chevs of the 40's or somthing like that?

Don't think its overfull, but i'll double check (rickmg)

Not sure on yours but some vents are screw in some are pressed in. Are you sure yours is stopped up?? I think its rare if it is.
...and yes, a couple vendors make the vents but not sure if they are for a torque tube as well as for a rear housing.

If its not over full, I go along with rickmg. The seals are bad, or perhaps the bearings are bad and causing the seals to leak. Are you having any rear axle noise? Maybe you'll be lucky and just the seals bad.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile
