I've been chasing a gas smell in the cab recently, that and my fuel gauge has been acting up.
I'd initially put the smell down to the warm weather but to be honest it was more than just a whiff....

Due to boxing in of my gas tank a simple look-see wasn't possible.
Access required the removal of the seat cushions and woodwork around the (NEW) tank.
A replacement under warranty was not an option as the logistics of this would be a complete nightmare!
Add to that the vendor in the UK has ceased trading....

Having done the strip out I discovered a porous weld and tell tale marks in the paint around the filler neck where it joins the tank.
I purchased some Petro Patch epoxy type putty as welding was NOT an option, for obvious reasons.
I formed a bead of putty around the weld and i'm pleased to say the cab now smells just like it should...old truck!

The sender is another matter altogether, the sender float well...doesn't!
It's a Universal adjust to fit type I got with my gauges,it would seem the foam has decided to become porous and absorb gas??

Ethanol perhaps,as I know that also contains cellulose which I DO know can attack certain plastics.....
Yet another problem caused by ethanol methinks......

I got one made with stainless cable at our local Yacht Marina,I managed to use the original conduit/sleeve,so it only cost a few bucks/pounds.

Beat the heck out of waiting on a replacement from the USA too.

I changed from 750/17 bias ply tires on 2 piece rims to 215/85/16 on tubeless rims. I also oiled the springs with Fluid Film.

WOW! what a difference in the ride and handling of this old truck.

I finally broke down and spent the $6 to buy rebuild parts for the one leaking rear wheel cylinder and went through the process of installing the kit. I hate brake work!

Now, i just need to replace the drum, the wheel cylinders on the other wheels, all the brake shoes and necessary parts, and then bleed the brakes. And replace brake lines.

Got the old rope rear main seal out of the new 235 that will be going in my 37,figured the gasket set would also have the neopreme seal but no so back to the parts store to order one. I was beginning to think I would have to pull the crank completely out but was able to get it by just loosening the rest of the mains.

I picked up the rebuilt head for the 216 yesterday. It looks much better!

All of the wheel cylinders are in and most of the new brake lines. I had to wait on a new differential cover gasket before putting the line to the driver's rear.

Had the 11 year old boy in the garage to open the rear diff, he removed all but the top bolt. He is slowly coming around to see how old trucks can be fun to work on. He told his older sisters, "Look, I got a grease stain on my jeans! I am a legit car fixer now." They agreed that he was legit. 

Interesting to see " 4 37" stamped on the pinion. Did they put date codes on pinion gears in '37?

I re-adjusted the valves today, after determining for a fact that my truck has hydraulic lifters and not solids. As can probably be guessed, this made a world of difference!

Last night finished mocking up my ignition switches (no key). Using industrial control switches for various circuits. Also finished roof console, and 3 point seat belt install. Gotta start framing seat riser so i can move to sanding.

Got the gas tank & windshield installed this weekend.

The bowtie-red gas tank lends quite a patriotic touch.

Great progress on Clyde this weekend.

Brakes finished, bled and adjusted. Ended up using an extra master cylinder cap and made a pressure bleeding system. Worked very well.

Installed the rebuilt head. Had my 11 year old son laying on the fender putting in the head bolts.

Had some help from the older kids as well. Nothing better than teaching your daughter and her boyfriend how to torque down a head.

Here a few pictures: Brakes and Head

On the road in a few weeks?

I was filling up with gas and spilt some below the gas filler. You won't believe what it did to the paint. Also the running board paint. I was busy scraping all of the bubbled up paint off. Man I hate that. Don't know why that happened. Steven

Update since May:
- cleaned/painted accessories & mount-ons like the fuel pump; water pump, fan, & draft tube...
- cleaned & painted the FW Hsg (what a mess - old engine had a rear main seal leak and the interior of the housing was caked with oil and crud)
- moved FW Hsg, FW, & clutch to the "new" 216
- mounted the manifold assembly
- mounted the restored Fram remote oil filter
- plumbed the filter
- pressurized the system and confirmed flow to and from the filter, and not to the floor grin

Next up: prep the chassis to receive the "new" powertrain and proceed with re-assembly.

- Bill

Bought enough material to build three sawhorses to support the chassis for my '58 Apache. Want to get it up to a workable height to get it ready to paint right after completing the engine work.

Also bought a Skat Blast abrasive blasting cabinet to be able to clean a lot of smaller parts as well as some large parts. Looking forward to receiving the cabinet next week.

Gonna be busy in Raleigh, NC

on my '65 chevy C10 :

Last week I finally swapped on some OEM used wiper arms I've had for ages...

The arms that were on there when I bought it are a little different, but I figured I'd wear the last set of blades out before I swapped 'em.

This set of arms seems a lot tighter against the glass... we shall see.

Also, the stop light switch at the top of the brake pedal was a little loose and one of the connecter plugs had come off a bit, so my tail lights would come on for a moment, then go out... consistently. Very odd. I wiggled the switch speed nuts back snug and took the wires on/off and it is good to go for now.

old trucks are fun.

Got my 9 yr old son to help me get some MMO in the cylinders of a couple spare stovebolt engines. Also some penetrating oil down the valves. Good lesson for him on how an internal combustion engine works. Could see things starting to click. One of these two motors will be a winter tear down/ maybe rebuild project for me and the kids....if I can come up with an engine stand and locate a few parts.

Tonight I got some bolts into the flywheel mount holes to provide a way to turn over with a bar. The 235 turns completely. 216 turns but has a tight spot...will give it some more soak time.

The brake pedal assembly and floor pans are all back into the truck.

Also hung the manifolds and carb on the side of the rebuilt head.

Big day for me coming up this week. Cab and bed of my '57 3100 are ready for paint in Casper, WY. I will tow my frame & fresh 265 down to the shop (Salt Creek Classics) on Wed 7/22 & we will begin re-assembly. It's been a long process but, little by little, I am getting there. I've had this truck since 1969 & it was my DD for years--its been in pieces since 1992. Yeeeee Hawwwww !!!

I welded a patch panel on a fender. I also bought the wrong solenoid and have to take it back and exchange it for the right one.

Weekend/past few days- I ran the main fuel line from the new tank to the fuel pump & I hammered a new battery tray patterned after the original one. The battery fits in it, too thumbs_up

I refurbished my headlight bucket assemblies (once I saw they cost $80/ea.), installed the fuel filler neck, & my buddy installed the new parking lamps.

That is my favorite picture of him with the truck so far; and there's been a lot of them the past 4.02 years.

Last few days:
- Broke off the block drain in the block
- Removed the broken portion
- Replaced the block drain with a period valve from my 1947 engine

Modest progress, but directionally correct!

I'm fixing years of repairs done by other people. Things like riveted on patches. Bolted on hunks of metal for who knows what. The radiator was tied on with bailing wire on one corner. I was having fun. It was good to be off on a Friday.

I sealed my gas tank with the KBS Coatings Tank Seal Kit. The kit includes cleaner, etching solution and sealant as well as gloves and stir sticks. It was a 2 day process which included overnight drying. Very pleased with the results. I used an Eastwood tank seal kit on a prior project and this sealant is much easier to use.

I had a very clean tank to begin with. 2 years ago I inspected the tank, cleaned out varnish, then cleaned out any rust with muriatic acid, rinsed, dried and then filled with gas. After 2 years it had minimal traces of rust.

Yesterday I rinsed with Dawn dish detergent, water, then the KBS system products. Sealant was added today. Check my 7/25 and 7/26/15 BLOG entries for the photos.
A view inside the tank.

Wired up the starter,Alternator and bolted down the 2 barrel. Distributor install is next followed by the new shocks. Getting close to putting the front clip back on. Why is it these things always take forever?

Not as much this weekend as planned (at least on the truck - many house items completed).
- Cleaned and contrast painted serial numbers on the trans & the engine
- Put a heater control valve in the cooling system, set-up as a bypass for now until I'm certain the block is clean (valve is just cracked open)
- cleaned and painted linkages in preparation for engine install
