Not a question for the purists. I am looking at replacing the stock taillights on my 54 with a customized installation. Reverse lights would be nice too. Has anyone seen or performed a nice customized taillight installation? I was originally considering installing the taillights on the rear support/crossmember before realizing clearance could be a problem with the tailgate down. I'm also looking at modifying the rear stake housings. 1958 chev passenger cars have a tail light housing that mounts flat and has two bullet shaped lenses.

I purchased some new style tail light housing that would fit in the panel of the bed just below the tailgate. The housing are billet aluminum with three bulbs in each housing. Two bulbs for the tail lights and a halogen bulb for the stop/signal. This installation really cleaned up the back of the truck. If you would like to see a picture of the installation just let me know and I'll go snap a digital picture.

Thanks Joe. Where did you get your taillight housings? Can one of the three bulbs be used for a back-up light? With the mounting on the rear support crossmember, do you have decent clearance when the tailgate is down? A digital photo would be appreciated.

I recessed the taillights so they are flush with the panel and everything clears just fine.....I think they would have cleared with being mounted to the panel without the recess.

I just installed backup lights on my truck ... I used a pair of parking lights for a 47-53 -- Chevy Duty part # 47-012

I like the 54 tail lights! But I added bed-roll tail lights for added safety ... and pizzazz!

Alan, nice touch with those lights in the roll pans. Do you use those lights as brake lights? I will check out your pic diaries. Your taillights look nicer than mine...yours have chrome/stainless trim and mine are rather plain looking, just a black housing and featureless lens. Are yours stock?

The back up lights are strictly back up lights.

My tail lights are stock -- you can buy 'em from Chevy Duty same as mine ... plus I just put new lenses in with the blue dots and I love 'em!

My tail lights, and the bed-roll lights, operate as brake lights, park lights and turn signals. I put aluminum foil inside the tail lights and they're as brighta s the hallogen bed-roll lights!

I saw a cool set of taillights at a show two weeks ago ,they took a set of 37 **** taillights which resemble old bullet shape headlight buckets,removed the mounts,cut a slot in stake area to set it in partially ,and tacked it to it ,smoothed it out,looked great.
