The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop HOK on PPG primer

Hi all!

Was hoping that someone could provide me with their experiences of shooting House of Kolor paints over a PPG primer/sealer (K-36).

Shot the front end parts in K-36 this weekend and then Amy decided to change colors from a PPG to a HOK.

What is going to happen if I shoot HOK over PPG?
I have heard some horror stories, but there were too many variables to conclude that it was the primer that caused the problem.

I would ask HOK.

I have. ZERO help - all I get is a sales pitch. They won't even describe what MIGHT happen if I use it over ppg. Of course - they may not know.

Hopefully, someone has made the mistake (or not) and can tell me how it turned out for them.

I know that Tip Top primers and Clears work just fine under/over HOK. Which surprises me since HOK products are so sensitive.

I would stick within one brand. Can't you have the color mixed in PPG?

in general I agree - but I'm NOT going to strip these parts back down to bare metal AGAIN.

I haven't been able to replicate that color - Tangelo Pearl Base Coat (HOK code = PBC-32).

That does not mean that another orange that is pearl will not work - just haven't checked with the boss.

Update: according to several places. Everything SHOULD work fine as long as I seal the primer (required step anyway). They suggested using a HOK sealer over the K-36 rather than adding a catalyst and reducer to the K-36 to create a sealer (see p-196p info sheet from PPG for details on using k-36 to seal).
