i left the key in the ignition engine off with the key in the on position and was under the truck installing some new springs when smoke started pooring out the coil.
i assume it gets voltage when the key is in the on position even if the engine isnt running?
the coil is inside an aftermarket holder polished alluminium cup.
when i pulled the top of the coil it came off leaving the body inside the holder....
and .....i pressume is oil inside
there was about two inches of oil? inside
is this normal? is this to be expectec when key is left in on position ( truck stalled and key was left untouched)

then there would be current flowing thru the coil all the time.
Having a cover over it makes it worse because the heat is
contained and can't dissipate properly, that by the way also
shortens the life of the coil under normal operation. Better
check your points, that can fry them also.
If you would have been lucky enough to stop the engine with the
points open....nota thing would have happened.
Older style coils are oil filled to transfer the heat.
How hard is it to get parts over in Japan???

dg impossible for anything that isnt generic. have to get everything shipped over ...which basically doubles the price. coil oil stinks! i picked up a new coil in japan for the `bargain` price of 100usd.....groan  still i have to say theres nothing like seeing the old girl sat in a carpark full of modern japanese ugos to make it all feel worthwhile, and shes certainly working for a living ferrying crap around tokyo

coolant fluid in all sorts of coils and other forms of transformers.
Need I till the doctor, don't drink any of it or us it as a hand lotion?

"Hydraulic fluid, brake fluid, recycled oil, capacitors, and oil-filled electrical equipment such as some ignition coils." (ignition coil capacitors) - made before 1979 (1930s to 1979).
