I replaced my water pump on my 216 truck Chevy and went ahead and replacing thermostat as well. I ordered the thermostat and gasket from Jim Carter and there is a large O Ring included. I am not familiar with this O ring and didn't see one taking the old unit out. Is it necessary and if so, where does it go?

I have never seen an O ring in there.

I looked on the LMC web site and it shows an O Ring along with the thermostat and gasket so I don't know. Unless someone can tell me different, I don't plan on using it..

I believe that the O ring is for some aftermarket Thermostat covers that have a Grove machined into them. They most likely include the O ring to "make sure" to cover all the possibilities.

Brian Moore, I agree, the thermostat works on six and v8 engines. It would be used on aluminum thermostat housings also the swivel neck. I think the vendor puts both gaskets so as to cover both applications. I suspect maybe the cost a little more? If you were to buy the thermostat only $8.50 and a $1.00 flat gasket As it probably wouldn't be much more of a difference in cost including the o ring.
