Just received my seat back spring cover from Jim Carter and I am trying to figure out how this mounts to the back of the upper seat assembly. Does anyone have the install instructions or a photo of how this mounts to the seat?

Thanks....

Tim

Tim,

Do you want to use the original-style "barrel clips"?

Or, will you use "hog rings"?

Did you buy JC's upholstery installation kits - it is inadequate; or, will you use your own material layers between the upholstery and the springs?

Maybe Denny will post a link to his upholstery installation "photo-logue"?

Tim,

I plan to use the original type barrel clips. The vinyl covered and stitched cardboard seat back cover has a metal rod across the top. Just need to see how it installs. The original seat back spring cover was long gone. Any help with this would be most appreciated.

Sorry, Tim,

I misunderstood. I do not think I have seen a seat-back spring cover.

What is the JC part number?

Tim,

I have seen/bought that item but have never installed it in my 1954 trucks. It would be interesting to see a photo from outside of a truck - I do not think it can be seen from outside a 1954 truck.

Seats/seat-frames changed in 1950. I do not know if the seat-frame back changed.

Also, I cannot find that panel listed in the Master Parts Catalog.

So, I am as interested as you are in seeing someone's seat with that panel installed.

If you click on the link in my signature it will take you to my truck build site for my 1954 3600. Jump back to page 6 and scroll down near the bottom. You should see some pics of the seat back cover piece and its mounting hardware etc. (click the pics for a larger image). It used similar style clips as were used on the door panels but with a little more tooth to them. Theres one in one of the pics.

The one on my truck came with the truck when i bought it (one owner, bought new in 54 by a farmer in Kalispell MT). And i believe it and its hardware to be original. The brown grain pattern on the cardboard matched the grain on the original seat cover.

I like the way it looks in my truck (sorry no outside pics) and you can see it through the back window and corner windows. Just covers that little bit of seat back you would see otherwise.

Hope that helps, ill try to get a pic when i pull the Old Man outta storage for the summer.

Chooglin,

Thanks very much for the post and information. You have a very nice photo-log of your restoration.

Here is the "page" with that cardboard-backing on/for the upper seat cushion.

Thanks Tim and Chooglin, but I would still like some outside the truck photos or instructions on how this seat back panel mounts to the seat back!

As far as install goes... Its really just those 6 push in upholstery (?) fasteners. They compress to go through the holes in the middle of the cardboard and then through slots in the vertical braces of the seat back. Then expand again once you release them and the expansion stops them from moving back out and keeps the cardboard fairly tight.

Does the repop piece not have any pre-punched holes? Im not sure where you would get the fasteners from. I was able to reuse my originals.

The fasteners look like the ones used to attach the firewall pad which are available from the various vendors.
