I just put a 350 with a 700R transmission in my 49 3100 the thing that determined motor location for me was clearance for the distributor and valve covers with the firewall.

Me too, that's the issue clearance at the firewall.

This is what I used to set a small block in my 52 panel which should work for you? Don't know if this will help you any but here it is. I have enough room behind my BIG distributor that I can put my hand around it.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile

I set my engine as low as I could, the bottom of the oil pan is just above the bottom level of the Mustang II crossmember,I,like Alvin can get my hand round the back of the HEI distributor (just).

I trimmed about a 1/4" off the toeboard/floor area just above the bellhousing but can still use the original trans cover.

Make sure that you use an HEI distributor when you fit your motor as they are quite a bit larger than the older style.

Is it possible to remove the distributor once the engine is installed?

Carl,
When you test fit the motor you should have a dist. that you are going to use and try it. If you have enough room behind the dist. to get your hand back there it should come out as you can tilt it as soon as you raise it out of the block an inch or so and the set back in the fire wall is tall enough to come up and out. I would test fit an HEI dist. even if you are not going use one right now, you may want one down the road.

Agree with firewall clearances but also an eye on tranny shifter if thru the floor.
