Completely automatic operation. It must be installed with the pressure hose on the end opposite the spring cavity which is the obtrusion on one side of the valve. I like the idea of the coolant circulating through the heater hoses but not through the heater core during the warm/hot months.
Course my 49 216 which is still mostly original seems to work fine as is but may not with a slightly hopped up 235 that's being readied.

This would accomplish some positive flow from under the thermostat housing to the water pump inlet and assuring coolant flow through the block.
