In tuning up the 59 235 in my 51 3100 I discovered that the ethanol in the new gas creates a substance in my carb that causes it to clog.I decided to run alcohol free gas and it works. No more carb crud. The problem is this gas is expensive and I have to travel too far to get it so I'm going to try another carb.I noticed that lots of people here use the new gas in their old rigs with no problems.
So what carb can I use without modifying fuel lines/linkage etc?I want a manual choke. Will my current air cleaner work?---Jack

it wasn't the ethanol. I have had zero problems with ethanol. (except my weed eater) The reason you had crud in your carburetor is you have crud in your fuel system. Alcohol doesn't curdle into goo. There is no reason to change carburetors. Use the E10, it works just fine.

My 49 216 w/the notorious Rochester B carb hasn't had any problems w/87 octane E10 gas. Starts and runs nearly flawlessly w/no hesitation.....(knock on wood).
I've got approx. 9K miles on it since I rebuilt the carb & head.

Your crud is either coming from the fuel system (old gas tank is notorious for this) or your getting it in the gas.

Put a good late model inline fuel filter between the tank and fuel pump and a clear filter such as this filter betwwen the fuel pump and carb and try the E10 again.

Good luck

I went through this discussion right here about a year ago. I read that the carb's metal coating wears off over time and the alcohol reacts with the base metal and oxidizes leaving a residue. There even was a picture of the crud. So I cleaned the system and tried alcohol free gas and it worked. No more crud. Put over 3000 miles on it like that.
So was I fed a line of bull before? what's the story here?
I would still like to know what carb other than a rochester g will fit my engine without modifications.

Here a list from carbking if you decide to try a carter

THERE ARE DIFFERENCES IN THESE CARBURETORS! THAT IS WHY THERE ARE DIFFERENT NUMBERS!

Some of you have already experienced some of these differences such as the "ported" vs "manifold" vacuum take-off for the distibutor.

Use the list as is, and I would guess few issues. However, changing from one application to another may lead to issues.

At any rate, here is the list:

The gas formulated with ethanol also has highly volatile additives to make up for the lower energy derived from the ethanol. This formulation appears to have an unintended effect of being an efficient solvent of crud which normally accumulates and stays put on the inside of the tank and inside of the fuel lines. Even if your system is fairly clean, if all of that 'little bit' of crud is washed out of the tank and lines, it will settle out and collect in the carburetor.
