So new to the forums a bit, tryin to sort out the drivetrain on my new to me 46 chevy truck.
was runnning and driving, until the last crank and BAM something in the starter broke off. After removing the starter, it looks like its a hack job like the rest of the drivetrain. Any help would be helpful
Motor is a late 60s 250 inliner, from what I have gathered from the casting numbers. could be wrong? any ideas on what starter would be what I need to put in there?
heres the starter after the nose broke off.

The first thing you need to do is find out why it blew up. I have never seen that happen even from dropping one on the concrete floor.

It looks like the bendix is stuck on the fly wheel and never retracted.Could have been post implosion. See if there is any forein material around, stone, screw or anything that could have jammed on the gearing and caused the housing to break. The starter should have a name plate somewhere on it.

So, this is what ive got sorted. Got a new starter, turns out its a 250 4.1l (powerglide trans) starter, even though its bolted to an original 3 speed trans... well not so much bolted, let say...attached lol
Replaced the starter, still didnt want to turn over. So, to check and see what the issue was with a fear of the worst (something siezed) I decided to pull all the plugs out, a few were VERY wet with fuel, so i attached my remote start trigger to the new starter, and briefly thought to myself "I should probably not stand right infront of the spark plug holes when I hit the button" I then stepped to the rear of the front fender so I could see the plug holes and hit the button.
Long story short, I didnt step far enough back, the cylinder was completely full of fuel hydrolocking it (hints the broken starter) and I was showered/sprayed in the face with said contents of cylinder.
After the initial shock and rinsing of eye that took the brunt. I covered the head with a big shop rag and turned the motor over a bunch clearing all i could out of the cylinder, put new plugs in it and it roared to life.

Now, I need to figure out how to keep the fuel pump from absolutly flooding my motor, so purchased a fuel regulator and some line to make a return run.
Fingers crossed that this will be the end of that adventure.
:/
Oh the joys of working on/driving a truck I didnt build.

well looks like im gonna end up pulling the motor. checked oil today and oil level has risen since yesterday so something is in a bad way. gonna drain a bit and see if I cant determine what the culprit is fuel/coolant/both, eitherway its not great. probably do a compression check and pull the heads this weekend. oil pressure hasn't been great either so I think she is pretty worn out :/
had her for less than a week and shes parked lol
oh well, time to save up for parts, and knuckle up.
wish me luck smile

If it were coolant it would look a little milky. Smell the oil and see if it isn't gas. You could have a bad fuel pump, letting gas get through to the crankcase. I hope it's the fuel pump as it's an easy fix. Larry

mechanical fuel pump not being used, it has an electric fuel pump, with no regulator or return is what I meant.

Ill be pulling some oil today or tomorrow to check and see if I can determine the culprit.
