Hello, names Johnny .
New here and hoping to find some info ! Got a 41 coupe and I wanna make this thing a driver without making a 401k loan! The car has a 216 and needs head work. I really don't want an oil slinger in this car because I wanna drive it ALOT! Found a 250, will that mate to my manual Trans? And as far as the mounts , will I just need to get side mounts ? Where do I find em? Do they come with location info?? Also I can't stop thinking about dropping a v8 in it! Can I run a 350/350 without doing away with tourqe tube?? Hoping I get some info on here and maybe make new friends! Thanks!

Hey Jonny, welcome to the Bolt!

There will be plenty of folks here that can help you with your questions. As I am not certain if the bellhousing is a straight bolt up to a 250. Certainly an easier swap would be to a 235/261 since that IS a direct bolt in and all the parts hanging off the engine will swap as well.

However, don't be down on the low pressure babbit engine. If it runs well, why mess with it until you need to? I've convoyed good distances (several hundred miles at a time) with splasher motors and have never had an issue.

Oil slinger engines in trucks won WW II- - - - -along with millions of civilian vehicles that were produced from the mid 1930's to the mid-1950's. People drove them "a lot" back then. My grandfather supplied a lot of the beer consumed in Nashville with a couple of 1934/35 Chevy tractor-trailers on a regular run from Milwaukee and St. Louis in the late 1930's, with engines a lot more primitive than a 216. What's different now?

You know Jerry, I'd bet close to 90% of the people who issue the scare warnings about "babbit pounders" have never owned one. The fear mongers even spread the myth to new owners of 228 GMCs who ask me about upgrading to an insert engine. The myth is so deeply ingrained they include engines that never had babbit in the first place. That tells me a lot about their knowledge of the real world.

Johnny1941, my point in saying this is to stress to you the importance of not taking everything the on the street 'advisers' tell you as facts. You have a lot to learn and you've come to the right place to get an education on these engines.

Well what hot rod Lincoln and Cletus say is right, what I would do is pull the 216 out and remove base, check the engine for wear and tear, 216 is a good engine and will give good service if maintained and run with in it's power range, the world ran on Babbitt bearing for a long time. On the 250 set up a good example is JoeH's truck http://www.stovebolt.com/gallery/hand_joe_1937.html
It's a 37 but shows what he did. the easy swap would be 235/261 six. If your going automatic transmission, your going open drive line and will be doing the whole whole thing front to rear, check out the tech section and a few other sites on the internet, check out hamb or hot rod sites, Jbennett

Justhoursenround, I hope you didn't chase Jonny1941off. I know that wasn't your intent. People here are real 'gear heads' and as such love to read about and solve problems others are having with their rides. Many like myself don't know all the answers but want to learn how other guys solve them for that day in the future when I hear that 'clunk'. Heck, I even ask questions here about the v12 flathead in my 1938 Lincoln Zephyr. Hotrod Lincoln and others have been very helpful to me and no one has given me the least bit of 'flak' about it. I visit another forum site where if I ask a difficult to solve problem, the response can be, "I wrote a check to my mechanic".
So, welcome Jonny1941 and ask away!

beltfed, not unless he's really thin skinned. My point was this is a truck site not a car site. If he had thought a bit he could have just asked about the engine without referring to the Coupe part. Maybe the question was appropriate for the Greasy Spoon. I too have been chastised for posting in the wrong forums and I'm still here. Many of us, myself included, have old cars along with our trucks and it seems most of our questions about cars end up in the "Spoon".
