Need some help. when building my Suburban I installed a late model 31 gallon tahoe/suburban tank betwen the frame rails behind the rear axle. I forgot about venting it. It takes forever to fill it up with gas. The gas sloshes out of the filler tube if I go too fast.Is there a way now to vent the tank? Can just the filler tube be modified to vent the tank? Should have remembered about venting before installing the tank. Not a big deal but I would like to be able to fill the tank faster. Any advice?

I'm not sure if you can get a vented gas cap for your filler neck but if you could that would be the easiest way to do it. If it has the late model twist on cap that is not vented you may have to take the filler tube out and graft a earlier tube to it that will accept a vented cap.

Weeds,

The tank you installed should have had some vent fittings up on the top of it that can be used?

Some questions for ya:

* How big is the filler nozzle and does it have any elbows or bends in it?

* Got any photos of the installation you could share with us?

If the filler neck is big enough and a straight shot down into the tank you could try sticking a long piece of half inch i.d., gas quality, rubber hose in the neck, running down into the top of the tank and then try filling the tank. That hose will vent out the air as the tank is filling. but that will only work if the filler neck is large enough not to restrict gas flow.

Similar to how they vented the blazer style tanks.. except the tube was outside the neck....

We need more information on what exactly you did in order to help you. Did you utilize the late-model filler neck as well? There should be a vent tube that comes up and connects with the filler neck. If you modified the way the late-model tank works then we can't answer it without knowing that.

Don S,Hot Rod and 46gmcpu. Thanks guys for the replies. The tank is stock late model Chevy Tahoe/Suburban 31 gals The filler neck is a straight shot to the tank with no bends or elbows. I will try the hose trick. If that does not work I will drop the tank and look for the vent tube. If I put a hose on the vent on top of the tank what does the other end of the hose hook to? Or is it just left open and loose?

Modern vent is connected to a valve and a cannister to capture and return the fumes. It might be a simple case of adding a vent tube inside the fuel filler tube. If the rubber hose works then I might be tempted to make a metal fuel line to make it more permanent. Don't push the vent tube too far into the tank. just about to the "full" level shpuld work. Good luck and let us know how you get on with it.

Weeds.. if you end up running a vent tube I would suggest doing it like the link I posted above and again below, just attach it back into the filler neck the way GM did it on the early 70's Blazers.

vented the blazer style tanks

if you use one of the vents on the top of the tank make sure the end of the hose is raised higher than the neck is .

They make a Vent Hose End that is also a rollover check valve with insect screen.
