Hi All,

Is the valve timing check typically done, or do most folks rely on the timing marks and move forward?

Have any of you come up with a procedure to check valve timing on an engine without the flywheel housing in place? The engine I'm working on is a 1951 216 that will be swapped into my 1947 3100. The FW housing is still "in the truck".

How did You get the old engine out of the truck?
Did you pull the trans and then the clutch+flywheel?
It,s impossible to leave the bellhousing in the truck without doing the above,because there,s 4 bolts behind the fly wheel holding it to the block.
This goes for all 216,235 and 261 engines.

Put 3 bolts into the crankshaft flywheel bolt holes and use a pry bar to turn the engine. Align the timing marks on the cam and crank gears, and the #6 cylinder should be at TDC on the compression stroke. (both valves closed)

It's possible to fit a degree wheel and a dial indicator and actually do a degree check, but I don't think I've ever seen a stovebolt engine out of time with the marks aligned.

Sorry I wasn't more clear, the FW is "in the truck" because it's still attached to the engine that's coming out. I'm moving a lot of hardware from the original engine to the swap engine (FW hsg, FW, clutch, water pump, thermostat housing, manifolds, etc.).

Getting the engine out while leaving the FW housing in would be quite a trick.
