Unbelievable what they want before they will answer a simple question.

Keep box size cut down as small as possible as size, as well as weight, figures in the cost. I've found, at least in my area, that Fed-X is cheaper than UPS. If you have a bicycle shop close to you the boxes bikes come in are just right to ship doors. It also helps if you can ship to a business address....and its always a couple dollars cheaper if you have an account with, say, Fed-X. I've saved a few dollars on everything I ship by doing this. Just ideas for you.
I might also add that some bolters testify that Greyhound is the way to go but some of us, me included, have found that all Greyhound stations are not the same!!!
I can't tell you what your shipping will be but hopefully a tip on how to save a dollar. Oh, by the way, a fellow sent me two doors from Utah in 2008 and it cost me $200. Some folks just don't consider the shipping cost if someone else is paying the bill...if your in no hurry always ship GROUND or if by mail send it regular post in most cases.
EDIT: I might add as information that a UPS "Store" is NOT owned by UPS and they will fleece you in a heart beat. Unless you have no option stay away.

Easy. | | | | Neverdone Unregistered | Neverdone Unregistered | Anyone know how much to ship an AD door (shell only) from Virginia to Texas? Carl Carl ,A lot of car/truck websites have hauling boards try contacting several of the haulers you may be surprised how often they pass by your place on there way with other loads and sometimes empty OR Field trip !! Maybe I am a little more adventurous than most but I would explore several options , including going to pick it up myself . Of course I would try to make the trip pay for itself by finding other items along the route that I or my local friends need..... deliver something from VA. to Texas . or back . Of course sight seeing on the back roads can be fantastic and there may be other bolters along the route | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 Renaissance Man | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 | Junker, currently in Northern Michigan, Best tip so far, practicality aside. Wish I could do the road tip as you suggested. The only issue that I see is my inability to resist buying more trucks, of which I already have too many. Carl, formerly from Southern Michigan

Carl, I ship all the time. FedEx is cheapest, then USPS, then UPS. They all have simple websites to find out the price. I have shipped rear barn doors. I've never used Greyhound , too much trouble and the whole process is up to a loosely written requirement. You are stuck with whatever counter guy is there that day. Anyway, you have to do some work to scrounge a box or cut one down for the door. If you stay under 150 lbs for FedEx you are good to go. 55 lbs, 48 x 30 x 8 (a door in a box?) is about $56. Va to Tx. USPS has a 108"-110" limit I think (girth plus length), don't know UPS limit. FedEx seems to only be a 150 lb. limit, no dimensional size limit as far as I can tell. I get all my boxes and packing material by dumpster diving furniture stores and stores that do import. Bike shops, appliance stores, etc. are good also for the big boxes. Your box will have to be the good cardboard not the thin cardboard. Boxes from China are thicker and better. The key to packing is tightness of item in box and sharp corner relief. I just get it to hold and then use their "counter tape" to finish. I create my own label or you can fill out a label at the drop off store and they will attach to box. If your city does not have any of those places....you're screwed. The chances of finding someone thru a hauling board is zero. Like you said. I looked at Uship once and thought I was filling out an application for a job at the FBI. Forget them. Also it generates a never ending supply of emails from every shipping co. and dating service there is. | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 2,554 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 2,554 | I have used greyhound a few times and everything was great. You can ship really large parts for an affordable price. Ive never had any problems picking up parts at our station. I like Fedex as well.

I get things delivered to me with no problems, but the Greyhound shipping "agent" does everything he can to make it difficult to ship anything from the Albany , NY depot.
I use FedEx ground. They'll help me ship anything.

They post 'less than full' loads on their board and trucking companies then contact you through them with offers. I have used them a couple of times. I found out not to jump on the first offer. On one I had a much better offer after I had made a deal. | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 893 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 893 | There's also private party's that do this, not just trucking companies. The guy that delivered my seat, had a S/10 blazer pulling a small enclosed trailer. Him and his girl friend would do this on weekends for extra money.

Carl, formerly from Southern Michigan Come to think of it Carl, that's how I ended up with the 51...or was it the 29 ... maybe the 53 .... or the ..... your right , it is cheaper to just have it shipped .... Dan | | | | Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 608 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 608 | Just to add to this......... Won 2 different auctions on evil bay about 2 days apart,4-5 yrs ago,on what turned out to be a matched set of 1951 doors. Seller was in Kingsburg Calif. Used Greyhound and he sent them to the nearest terminal to Me which was Hempstead,L.I. Well wrapped and boxed up in 2 used bicycle boxes, arrived undamaged. The Greyhound Agent called me when they got there. Was 100.00 apiece to ship. As I remember, took about 4 to 5 days to come across country. Would do it again in a Heartbeat!! regards, steve sr.
