Starting to work on the motor now. It ran fine but had lots of oil leaks. Bought a complete gasket and seal kit and plan on putting all new freeze plugs in as well.

I was curious as to factory color? If it has babbit bearings? It's from the Yellow Truck Company, don't know if that makes a difference?

Also, are there any cool old school hop ups that would work on it? It's a COE so there's limited space to work with.

Hy Straightjacket, in 1939 GMC introduced a new series of engines with full precision bearings (no babbit), these engines were the following cubic inch displacements 228, 236, 248, 256, 270 and 302, this series of engine was used up to 1959. Only the 270 and 302 were in use at the end of the production run. I believe the engines were painted a unique red colour. There have been books written in the fifties on hot rod mods to these engines and Chevy sixes of the time, hope that helps.

I think the earlier engines were green. This is much debated at oldGMCtrucks.com.

Thanks for the quick replies. After scraping off most the gunk,I can see a slight dull green/gray ish tint in some areas.I will try to find a spot with good paint to keep the debate going.

My main concern was the bearings, and stoked that there not Babbitt!
