My friend has no way to access the internet so I'm writing for him. His engine overheats, boils and blows steam. It overheats when standing or moving. It runs smoothly and exhibits no other symptoms. No white smoke coming out of the tail pipe.

He has done the following trying to fix it: radiator tested, new water pump, new head gasket and new spark plugs.

It's been sitting now for almost a year because he doesn't know what to try next.

Please help, Don

Maybe try and pressure test the engine to check for leaks?

Just because the radiator holds pressure doesn't mean it flows enough to cool the engine. Sounds like a restriction in the water flow somewhere. Take the cap off and look for water moving or for that mater bubbles coming to the top.

Sounds like restricted cooling flow.
Possibilities:

Partially blocked radiator core
Blocked cooling chambers in block and/or head (rust and sediment)
intake hose collapsing or internal separation
wrong head gasket (blocking passages)
faulty thermostst

First, thermostats did not start until 1928 on Chevrolet.
Second, ignition timing can have a lot to do with overheating.
I recently worked on a 1926 where everything checked out but overheated. I found there to be 2" of rust in the bottom of the engine water jacket. After cleaning that out the overheating problem went away.

Thank you, I'm getting a lot of good info. By the way the last time this engine was run, one of the tubes in the radiator split open.

I'll talk with my friend George(the owner) tomorrow morning to get some feedback for you, I wish he had internet access, he's not going to get it because he is a little old fashioned about how he does things. He knows his cars, and is avid car man from way back. Don

Great suggestions. George says its to cold for him to work on the Chevy this winter. When it warms up in Spring he will check the hoses first along with repairing the radiator. Next he will drain the block and pull the head to clean out the water jacket.

Thanks, Don

P.S. I'll be sure to give some feedback when we have it.
