For you guys that have changed the ring & pinion gear set s, can you give me some info on how hard it would be do for a feller that does not have a machine shop?

Like are there some special tool one would need? I have had just about everything else apart and never had issues fixing gears, bearings...etc...so the mechanical, following instructions etc.. no problem..

What make, year, and size truck?

12 Chevy rear-end ring & pinion gear set

I consider the equipment needed at a bare minimum would be a dial indicator with some type of magnetic or clamp mount system, some indicator dye such as Prussian Blue or white lead, and an inch-pound torque wrench for checking pinion bearing preload. 30 or 40 years' experience setting up rear axle gears helps, but I don't know where you can buy that!

Probably going to need a bearing cage and a press for the pinion bearing.

I would assume he's talking about a GM 12 bolt rear end.

My ignorance shows, as usual - I'll read and learn.

An interesting read/synopsis.

More information on GM 12 bolts.

Yes sir, sorry.. I was meaning a 12 bolt chevy rear end. I have a 64 c-10 with a 5-11 gear. Sort of rough on the pocket book to drive. I was thinking about going as high as I can go without having to change out the carrier(diff case). Maybe a 3.08. The rearend is in great shape. We have always checked it. I just serviced is when I put my truck back together and it is still clean.

10-4 on the 30-40 years exp... Most of the fellers I knew that I would trust to help with with this have died out. I have to take the approach to try something even if it is wrong or cost me more in the end. I am to the point now where I have to go after it if I want the experience.
