Drove my 53 (235) in town yesterday. on the way home, noticed not driving right, hesitation. Then it just quit and I coasted into a driveway. Noticed no fuel in fuel filter (in line before carb). Would fire with starter fluid and then quit, not getting fuel. Towed home and took off fuel pump. Took top off pump but could not figure out anything by looking. If I push in the lever should I feel/hear anyting (air) coming out?
Bad thing about the whole thing - While sitting waiting for AAA, a 40 Ford PU drove by and honked at me. OUCH!

Should feel suction on tank side when lever actuated. Sucks gas from tank and pushes to carb. Check lines from tank aren't blocked before replacing pump. Many guys put an in line filter at the tank to catch sediment.

I went thru a few pumps this short summer. I was using the Airtex 4149 one. One gave out completely another one would not return the pump arm back out fully and another would pump but had almost no pressure behind it. The one with little pressure could not even exert its self if you just rest your finger over the out port. It would pass air if you took you finger off. If i may recommend switching to a carter pump as i have not found a single person have issues with one as of yet.

I took off the line coming from the tank that goes into the fuel pump, gas was flowing, had to plug. line on the other side of the pump is clear all the way to the new inline filter. I think Carter may be the answer.

This is how the pump was when I took it out. All the other pumps I see on line are inverted. Was this installed upside down? Only has printed on it "Made in Canada" - What brand?

The fuel pump gasket is asymmetrical.

It would be (should be) obvious if you put the pump on up-side down - the gasket would either not be mated correctly with the block or not be mated correctly with the pump.

if it had been upside down it wouldn't have been running to start with wink

that's a common aftermarket pump, doesn't matter who made it, just needs to work - did you try working the arm as Ed suggested? if you don't hear/feel any action, get a new pump at your FLAPS

For what it's worth,I had the same problem last year- went through several pumps and they would fail after a few months. I ended up replacing the mechanical pump with an electric one- no problems since. Also I added a fuel filter before the pump, then another clear one just before the carb (primarily so I could monitor fuel flow).

There is an inline filter before the pump and one before the carb.

You may have a chunk drifting around in the tank which intermittently falls on the top of the pipe in the bottom of the tank. Happened to me. There is supposed to be a screen sock on it, but sometimes they are missing.

Happened to me once as well. Try disconnecting the fuel line somewhere between the pump and the tank and blow some compressed air towards the tank. make sure to remove the gas cap. This will clear the junk back out of the fuel line area of the tank, and let the fuel flow untill the junk chokes it off again. If the engine will run after doing this, it means you need to clean out the tank.

When it happened to me, I was still very new to the game. I replaced a lot of stuff before solving the problem. I remember laying out on the street and draining my gas tas tank. It turned out to be wood slivers that had become soaked in gas and would sink to the bottom. After I pulled them out, the truck ran great.
