Hello all! New to the forum, but have been doing some reading here after purchasing a 1946 Chevy Big Bolt! The 235 motor was in the process of being converted to 12v and it appears as though the starter never made the cut and was left out. I have yet to count the teeth on the flywheel, but it is to my understanding that the pre-1954 flywheels were composed of 139 teeth and will only mate to pre-1954 6 volt starters? A flywheel with teeth in the 160 range typically come from a powerglide and can be used with a newer 12v starter, is that correct? I just want to ensure I buy the right starter the first time and can see if this sucker fires up! Guy claims the motor was rebuilt recently so we'll see. I have uploaded a picture with the 6v starter I intend to use and will mount a 12v solenoid on the case. Does this appear to be the standard foot stomp starter used and can I simply mount the new solenoid right on her? Thanks for any info and help. I have already gone through the rest of the truck with voltage reducers, lights etc just if anyone was wondering.

The 6v will work for a little while in a 12v system...not long. I had my starter converted to 12v after it failed. I have a 235 in my 6100 and yours looks identical. My '49

can't tell from that pic if it's 6 or 12, the foot start was used with either, but if it still has the ID tag, 6V will be black, 12V red - there were 6V starters in cars that used the solenoid key start setup .... powerglides had "flywheels"? the higher tooth count flywheel is post-55, and if your 235 is newer than that maybe it has the flywheel needed for a 12V starter, which may be why the starter was left out

a 6V starter will work fine on 12V indefinitely, as long as you don't grind away with it for extended periods, you need to keep the engine well tuned so it starts quickly, lots of folks here have kept the 6V starter when converting to 12V
