From what I've researched so far, the 250's were in a 66, but not 64. No real worries there since it'll be something to play with and I'm not looking for a show truck. My biggest question so far is how they run on the highway with the 4 speed and 250 engine. Any ideas on the stock gearing for a 64? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 2,951 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 2,951 | I hear most folks with a 1964 1/2 ton say they have a 3.73 rear diff. Fourth gear has a 1:1 ratio and is no advantage over a 3 speed which is also 1:1. With a 235/75/15 tire (29" tall), your RPMs will be right at 2600 at 60 MPH with the 3.73 rear. They'll be 2800 at 65 MPH. Worse still if you go with a smaller tire diameter.
If you have a 3.42 rear then you'd be better off but still have higher RPMs than you'd like.

Since it's only a couple of highway miles at most, I think it wouldn't be too terrible. I might see if I can get him to send me the VIN to run a check on what year it really is. I've already got a request in for more pictures so I can see if the rocker panels on both sides are rusting away. If so, I'm going to have to make a really good inspection of the frame to see if it's still in decent shape. Patch panels are available for any body rust but frame rust is another mater entirely. Snatch it up and drive it Saturday. BTW I used to have a later model van that had the 250 with a 3 speed on the column and it did 65mph with no problem at all. Good luck.

The 250 & 230 are externally alike. It may have been replaced with a 250 or the seller is mistaken. Either way it is a good engine & should work well for what you want it for.

Good motor...acts like a small block V-8...pulls up well, and doesn't mind higher rpm's.
