My question is are they welded to the inside of the axle housing. How big of a deal is it to change them out?

The responses to the original poster seem to be referring to 5.367 (I guess/think those are the bolts, but, I wonder as you do).

I took the bolts out today fairly easily, now I am going to try and find a set of new ones or take 4 out of the top of another rear axle. Thanks for your help. | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 1,149 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 1,149 | Just curious. On the end of the bolt that is on the inside of the axle housing. Did the bolt have a hex head or a nut? Is the housing threaded? How did you remove the bolt? What do think caused the bolts to be beat to hell?
| | | | Joined: May 2012 Posts: 30 New Guy | New Guy Joined: May 2012 Posts: 30 | They were not threaded looks more like a wheel stud with barbs on it. Came out with putting a nut and hammering it out. I took 4 out tonight without damaging the threads on a old rear axle. Not sure if the barbs will be enough to hold it but should tell tomorrow. I think most rear axle have the 3-4 lower bolts damaged just from hitting some debris or people put a jack under the axle in a bad spot. | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 1,149 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 1,149 | Sounds like a specialized bolt, just for that application. Master Parts Catalog Shows 1929-54 pass 1/2 ton Bolt, housing to carrier 3/8 - 24 x 1 3/32 part# 348402 That seems to small of a bolt. Is that what you have a 3/8 bolts ? MPC list other parts numbers. But without sizes. | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 1,149 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 1,149 | Something like THIS bolt. The above link says the bolt is for passenger car axles, it might also work for truck axles. I don't know if the lug is for the wheel nut or the axle housing to carrier nut. | | | | Joined: May 2012 Posts: 30 New Guy | New Guy Joined: May 2012 Posts: 30 | Okay I have fixed two today so if anyone else goes through this problem. Here is what I found out, there are 2 different size bolts in the housing to compensate for the thickness in a few parts. I called everywhere and no one had correct ones I could find and I didn't want to take a $30 gamble. So I took 4 bolts out of another rear axle by taking the nut loose and leaving the nut on enough to hit it but not mess up the threads. Put them in by starting them and hitting them with a punch and hammer them having a flat washer and put a nut on other side and crank them in. | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 1,149 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 1,149 | Check out Obsolete Chevy Parts Co BOLT, HOUSING TO CARRIER NOS Part#:348402 When you say different size bolts, length or diameter? | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 1,429 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 1,429 | Thanks for posting that site. Haven't been there before. What a goofy site layout though. I had trouble with the search. Didn't think it was working but finally arrowed waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the page and saw the results. Never did get anything when specifying more info. Maybe just didn't wait long enough. I'll give it a try another time.

I just did some experimenting. I normally have my zoom at 150%. Selecting 29-72 Chev Trucks returns what is like putting 50 blank pages in front of what is returned. If I switch to 100% then it returns as I would expect. The moral of the story with that site is use 100%. Thanks jorb.
