Does anyone sell a complete charging system conversion that has alternator, brackets, alt harness and instructions all in one kit? Shouldn't have to piece meal it or re wire the whole truck.

I bought my one wire alternator from Jacksonville alternator jax Arkansas. Chevy of the 40s has two brackets for around $80 ea. A video on YouTube list his electrical wiring source in the comments. Maybe we could fill in the blanks here with this thread? My trucks a 1938 with 216

I've got a one wire Altenator on my 58 gmc. I removed the wiring for the generator and regulator, mounted the Altenator on the side of my small block. The one wire off it went to the battery cable on the starter. It works fine and was really simple. I'm going to wire up an idiot light for the dash later but for now that's it.Larry

a one wire alternator isn't the best choice...the 3 wire is way better and cheaper to replace/easier to find out on the road.

Autozone had 6 of my 1 wre alternators in stock, and more of the more expensive 1 wire, higher amp alternators. Mine was $65. Works great. Single heavy gauge wire to battery terminal of starter. Good luck with yours. Jim

Yes, one-wire replacement alternators should not be hard to find.

My 10 year old 1-wire 12v alternator (between 45-60 amps, but I forget) is wired through the stock 6v ammeter to battery. No problems with the ammeter and no problems with alternator. It is in a 54 truck (12v conversion), so there is no need to have a dash idiot-light.

This truck is not driven far from home.

well I guess it depends on what part of the country you are in....they aren't stocked everywhere because they are mainly used on farm and industrial equipment that run at a constant speed.

1 wire alternators are pretty commonly available at most FLAPS -NAPA at least- but there are other reasons a 3 wire might be preferable, Mark at Mad Electrical covers it well, the only real advantage to the 1 wire is simplicity of wiring .... Mark also sells good simple wiring kits for 3 wire alternator conversions and is a good source of tech info about alternators

One advantage to a light is you have an early warning that you threw a belt. Hopefully you notice the light before the truck overheats.

Another Great option would be to talk with Don Allen from Gener-Nator. He basically takes YOUR generator and builds an alternator inside. so in the end it looks like your generator but is actually an alternator !! Saw it on Leno's garage one night. I checked out his sight and talked to him about doing this for my 1929 Chevrolet 6v system with a Delco Remy 943-J Generator, here is what I got from him. Yeah it is expensive bu looks cool... I have NOT had this done, as i do NOT have that money sitting around.

The cutout on top is just for looks and acts as a pass thru circuit.

I set the charge rate on the 6 volt systems around 7.5 to 7.7 V.

I can set it for what you like if it's different.

I offer 6, 8 or 12 volt and positive or negative ground.

The 6 is 50 amps, 8 is 55 and 12 is 60 amps.

The cost is $895.00 exchange plus shipping with a 3 year warranty.

About 4 to 5 weeks turn around time and payment is due at time of shipping to you.

I am sending a few photos of your type with this email.

If you like I can provide a new ID tag with your numbers on it for $28.00.

You would use the original wiring and it would hook up to the cutout as before.
From my Understanding you send them your Generator, they gut it out, machine your case, build and insert the alternator components as specified above, or can customize them per your specs, put it all back together and ship it back to you... Also PRICE is more if you do NOT send it a Core.

Looks like an AWESOME device and replacement. Price is a little hi, but considering they are BUILT to ORDER & SPECIFICATIONS Plus warranty !!

Also sent some pictures of some other Delcos they have done:
Delco 943-B 8V Neg Ground
Delco 943-B 6V Neg GRound
Delco 943-B 6V Neg Ground 2

Can also get them Powder Coated or Chromed

Just throwing out another option...
