"defrost tubing" to the vents up towards the inside windshield?

There were two styles of GM accessory heaters:

1. Recirculating - works fine recirculating inside air for heat and/or defrost. Easier to install and restore. Less expensive - $50 for one needing restoration, but with a good motor (just strip and paint?). Less glitzy, but does the job.

2. Deluxe Air Flow (Fresh Air) - works fine using inside or outside are for heat and/or defrost. Harder to install and install. Much more expensive: $75-$100 for one needing restoration (and missing hard to find parts) - $250++ for a properly restored one. There were two similar styles: 1947-1952 with no interior input-air door, and 1953-55 with interior/exterior input-air door)

People will post links to photos of both styles.

Jay,

The 54 pickup that we are restoring had the recirculating heater in it. I have two restored fresh-air heaters but I think I will put the recirculating heater back into this truck (even though it will be a deluxe everything else cab).

That heater kept me warm in 8 degree temps on a 200 mile trip in Dec at night when I drove the truck from Teaneck NJ to my home in upstate NY. I was so warm (with no window seals) that I was driving in my tee-shirt.

I see that everyone has neglected to mention the Stewart Warner Southwind gas heater.
"Heat in 90 seconds" was the company motto.
Don't have to wait for the engine to heat up.

The 781-B was the model for your truck.
Great Art Deco styling.

From $50 in need of work and missing parts to $250 completely restored and all the installation parts included.

Used Southwinds in everything from snow plow trucks to VW camper buses here in New England.
