I'll have a doner engine block and hopefully all the tools to disassemble the block and then the tools to do the inspections on the cylinders, pistions, ring gap and how to read micrometers. If we have time, we can also get into checking bearing clearances. I'll have a lot of tools and we'll just play it by ear on what direction it goes. It may just turn into a tool discussion and tool use. Hope to set up in the parking lot by the river and start ripping things apart Saturday, mid morning. I'll try to post the tool list later this week after I get the doner moter out of the truck.
Hands on participation by everyone is expected. Or just bring a lawn chair.
I'm more of a machinist than mechanic (shade tree) and all input is welcome. Also John wants to learn more about thread repair and we can get into that as I have a nice tap and die set.
Thanks Don

There is always a lot of talk on the bolt about brake line FLARING. A short course on DOUBLE flaring by someone with a good took might help a lot of bolters. There are some good tips available on how to make sure they come out nice....including a good tool to do it. I think Grigg, or maybe it was ???? that spoke a lot about it on the ODSS forum?
just a thought...maybe for 2015? | | | | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 3,436 Moderator | Moderator Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 3,436 | Good idea Alvin. The double flare is something I have never done and I would think the right tools are real important, plus how to use them. Pipe fitting brake lines by hand is an art and takes a lot of pratice.
If some body wants to step up to the plate, we'll let you teach us.

The instructions in the box are clear and work well. I've done 3/8 steel fuel lines, and 5/16 brake lines. Also use it to form "bumps" on lines to slip rubber hose over.
1. Cut line to length with cutter or small grinding wheel. 2. Smooth cut edge flat with fine file. 3. Chamfer ID with reamer and file OD to slight chamfer. 4. Slip on fitting. 5. Tighten in tool per instructions. 6. Lightly oil die, and form in two steps as per instructions.
And Jegs NiCopp brake line is real easy to work with. | | | | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 3,436 Moderator | Moderator Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 3,436 | Thanks Woods! If you can make it to KC we can really use your help. I'll check into the flaring tool you suggested. Jerry (hot rod lincoln) gave me a great idea on how to teach people to read mics. What direction this clinic will go, we have no idea. I just want to have as many tools of the trade that we can get and follow the questions from there.

Let me know if you what me to bring a tubing cutter.

It will be a busy weekend. We will just play it by ear on what will go on, when and where.

Looks like it will be a learning weekend for everybody.
Here is an update on the engine block rebuild preps. Got the doner engine out of the truck and pulled the intake, found the intake pan rusted out. Pulled the valve covers off and found even more rust. In fact, had to use a pair of channel locks to pry one push rod out. Not a good sign. Engine would only turn about a quarter turn at best. Kroil in the intake ports and in the spark plugg holes and after setting for a while was able to get the crank to spin enough to get the torque converter unbolted. Fly wheel is off and we can also do a little on taking the ring gear off and putting a new one on, if there is interest. Monday I'll dig out the motor stand, mount it, then pull the heads and oil pan.
Hope to have the clinic set up late friday afternoon and then start tearing down the block Saturday about 10am with inspections some time in the afternoon.
If anybody wants any parts off this 78 F-150 with the 351 modified Cleavland, I'll bring them to the reunion. All I want is the block, if it is not trashed and the rest goes to the scrappers. This includes Fuel pump, water pump, intake, carb, exaust manifolds, heads and master cylinder. Any body parts and the auto trans, we'll have to talk about you picking it up. All those parts are in the bed of the truck or we can just make a scrap value deal on the whole truck. I even have a clear title.
