I bought points, rotor, etc. to tune up my recently acquired 69' GMC; C15, 350/4bbl, 400 Turbo tranny. When I pulled the cap, I found it was a electronic setup. Could that be original, or did someone convert? Advance Auto could not find these parts in their system. It's a Delco Remy cap with built-in coil, with a Standard(brand) LX-301 ignition unit inside. Any help offered will be greatly appreciated.

It has been converted to HEI. It was standard on 75 up models. A very common & worthwhile conversion.

Thanks. So what is the standard for tune up - new wires, cap, and rotor? Do you clean and lube any of the advance mechanism?

Not much to do to the stock HEI. Clean is good, Cap and Rotor, and..you are done. Wires if needed and Vacuum advance if bad. There is a mechanical advance that should be cleaned and very minimally lubed. But it is right on top and easy to see. That is about it.

Does anyone have a opinion on wires over the valve covers vs. under the manifold.

It's your choice, but the original layout may be easiest. The real question is, "Can anyone tell me of a wire set that actually fits?"

I have a Jegs under manifold set with 90 degree boots that has been installed over the covers. Otherwise the lengths were ridiculous.

If you choose under, look for OEM style clips, like for Corvettes. Some of the speed shop stuff is useless.

I've always used under the manifold wires from NAPA on my 283s, with the original holder clips, and they fit fine, as well as on the 350 I did for a buddy, neat and clean .... the only time I tried over the cover wires it was a pain to keep them from contacting the manifolds

Red58, are you using HEI wires from NAPA?

points on my 283, HEI on buddys 350, don't recall now if his were as-purchased or if I changed the ends .... and the routing clips were on all V8s pre-HEI, not just vettes

I like to use ready made, no assembly required, but I don't like to have to wrap the wires around the steering column a couple of times to use up the slack.

The wires on now are under the manifold, look like good fit, but both sides have straight boots on 3rd plug from front. They are ready-made. Can't find any brand with that mix. Can you buy single wires somewhere?

Has anyone checked with their local Chevy/GMC dealer? I'm always looking for that performance image, or a pretty color, so I never gave it a thought, but obviously there is nothing wrong with the Delco wire sets.
