Looking for a good part number for the rear wheel hub oil(grease) seal.

1946 Chevy 2 ton 2 speed rear axle.

Hey 3B, this should be a cakewalk for you.
BTW, when are you gonna pass along your secret part # resources to the rest of us?

Hy puppy, I think that would be National 455024, hope that helps.

I just took my old ones into a bearing supply place and had them match them for me. That worked.

Hey 3B,
I do not think that is the correct PN on the rear seal. Can you check for another # please?

Hy puppy, in my parts book it is very complicated to figure out the correct seal as there are serial number breaks involved, so I went to my old Victor seal book. the Victor book lists two possibilities one for a non splined shaft (I assume they're talking about the outboard end of the axle)Victor p/n 49799 = National 5850, and one with a splined shaft Victor p/n 49904 = National 6358, hope that helps.

Hey 3B,
Do you have a listing for the outer rear seal or flange gasket that goes between the wheel hub and axle flange?

Hy puppy, if you can tell me the number of bolts/studs, their diameter, the outside diameter of the axle/gasket and if possible the inside diameter of the gasket I might be able to look it up. Some outer wheel bearing adjusting nuts had a seal built into the outboard side of them if grease bearings were used, take the axle out and see what you have in that regard.

All my search found was an old GM part number that was a dead end.

Here are the specs:
8 bolt holes, 0.500" in diameter each
Approx. 4.700" outside diameter
Approx 2.900 - 3.100" inside diameter

This is the old gasket dimensions.

The adjusting nut and washer are just standard hardware without a seal. This is the same type gasket as any other full floating rear I have done, just with different dimensions.

Hy puppy, I found two candidates, FelPro part numbers
12281 i.d. 3 1/2" o.d. 4 7/8" 8 holes
12579 i.d. 3 1/4" o.d. 4 11/16" 8 holes
55328 i.d. 3" no o.d. listed 8 holes hope that helps.

Gentlemen,

While reading this thread and noticed a common part number. Puppy, your 2 ton axle may have some similarities. My 41 military rear axle uses the National 5850 hub grease/oil seal, and also uses a seal attached to the outer bearing nut. 3B, does your cross reference mention a part number 599847 for the seal on the outer bearing adjusting nut, and if so do you have some alternate part numbers? As for the hub/axle flange gasket, on 1941-45 military trucks, the gasket is actually metal "terneplate" part number 3660100, not a paper gasket. Later M-211 military trucks use a paper gasket. I have several of the paper gaskets as they are "extra" in the reseal gasket sets designed for the M-211 (the kits have several gaskets in common with my truck). Puppy if you are interested in the paper hub/flange gaskets, I will give them to you.

Hy Paul_WNC, as far as I know those nuts with the seal built in have been made of unobtainium for quite a few years, those outboard seals are only required if you have grease packed bearings. So if you would like to clean the grease out of your hubs/bearings, you could convert your hubs/bearings to oil type and remove the outboard wheel bearing adjusting nut seal. I would install new inboard hub seals while doing the conversion to oil hubs/bearings. The only place that you might find the original nuts with the seals would be something like Ebay

3B,

Thanks for the information. I found some of the outer seals, but hoped you had some holy grail source for spares. Does the gear oil lubrication method work for the wheel bearings?

Were 2 ton civilian COE applications the other vehicles that used the outer bearing nut seal? My parts manual indicates that the part is not military specific and always wondered what vehicle may be a donor. Inquiring minds want to know.

Paul

Hey Paul,
If your extra gaskets will work for me I will gladly put them to good use. See my measurements above.

Thanks,
JP

Hy Paul_WNC, I am not sure which trucks used the adjusting nut seal and grease lubricated bearings. Grease lubricated rear wheel bearings are not common, and oil lubricates the rear wheel bearings very well if the level of oil in the differential is maintained where it should be, hope that helps.

3B, so the mystery of the other vehicles that use the oil seal bearing adjusting nut persists... Thanks for the other bearing information, at least there is a viable "plan B" if the seals fail.

JP, I will measure the gaskets tonight and get back to you.

JP,

The gaskets I have are a no-go. M-211's use a paper gasket measuring 6.125 OD, 4.550 ID w/8 0.500 bolt holes.
