I have a 1958 GMC 270. Getting an S10 5spd tranny. What would I need to make this tranny work on my truck?Langdon stated an adapter plate? Not sure what to do or where to look.
Thanks

I'm guessing that a GMC 270 bell housing doesn't have a Muncie pattern for the tranny to bolt to. Is that right?

Even if you need an adapter plate to mate the S10 to the bell, you might consider swapping the S10 input shaft for a Jeep T5 input shaft. The Jeep input shaft has 10 splines and will allow you to use a more common (and cheaper/easier to find) clutch kit instead of searching for the more expensive 14 spline Astro clutch kit.

No adapter plate needed. That transmission should bolt right up to the bellhousing with the right clutch disc. I'm not sure if the driveshaft slip yoke on your 58 will mate to the t5... You may have to swap the slip yokes or even have a new shaft built.

I see other threads about putting a v8 in the same truck with a th350... Are you keeping the 270, or swapping to the 350/350? Perhaps you are gathering all the information before making a decision. Personally I like the gmc 6 motors. However my 59 gmc 1/2 ton longbed was born with a v8 from the factory. It sure is fun to drive when it is running. The stroked 1960 pontiac should be out of the machine shop this week. I can't wait to start smoking tires again!

BBSD, Will it bolt up without shortening the input shaft?

I'm really only familiar with the S10 swap with a 1963-1972 truck bell housing. For the 1963-72 trucks, the S10 input shaft is about 1/2" too long. I won't go into the details around solving that problem here, but for the 63-72 trucks, some modification is needed.

Never done the swap, so i can't answer the question. I know some have used spacer plates while others have cut the pilot shaft and elongated the splines. There are hundreds of pages of info about t5 swaps on the internet. For all intents and purposes, a t5 swap would be exactly the same as far as mounting to the bellhousing.

My appologies for any unintentional mis-information...

Before you get any money tied up in this, what year S10 did the tranny come out of? Do you have a metal tag # - something that looks like 13-52-### that's stamped on a metal tag where the tail housing bolts to the case. Metal tag should be on the DS.

Some of the later S10 tranny's had a Ford pattern so you need to know what year you have.

I've discovered that Modern Driveline makes an adapter plate that allows a FORD pattern T5 to bolt up to a Muncie bell. I have not investigated it further. It should allow you to bolt up a Ford case pattern Camaro or S10 T5, but it might also allow for a Mustang T5 to bolt up - but the Mustang T5 creates a whole new issue with yoke spline count etc. . . .

A 1988 should have a Muncie pattern. What rear differential does the truck have?
