on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 311 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 311 | I recently bought a '34 1.5ton with a '52 216 motor. The original wiring harness has been removed, and I believe the generator and starter are off of the same '52. I want to order a new original style harness (that has the voltage cut out on the generator). My question is can I instal a voltage cut out on the generator that is currently on the truck? Or do the Voltage cut outs only work with specific generators? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | the cutout is part of the early generator, if you have a 53 generator it requires the separate external voltage regulator, which shouldn't be too hard to wire up yourself - compare the wiring diagramsBill | | | | | Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 190 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 190 | red58 is correct. The original 1934 generator would have been a three brush generator with a cut out relay mounted on it. By 1952 they had gone to a two brush generator with a voltage regulator mounted on the fire wall most of the time. If you can post some pictures I can ID what you have or I can private message you my email address and you can send some pictures that way. Ken

There should be two wires attached to the left side of the regulator as it shows up in the picture, armature and field, which will go to the generator. The third wire will be routed from the regulator to one side of the ammeter on the dash and from there to the battery cable terminal at the starter. You have an early version of the 3-unit regulator with three sets of coils under the cover, a cutout relay behind the battery terminal, a current regulator behind the Arm terminal, and a voltage regulator behind the Fld terminal. If you can get a model number from the regulator, I might be able to provide some adjustment specifications for it. Jerry
