I had a major detail over looked and I didn't realise it until I started finding facts on Napco's . So I have an old Dana 24. front drive shaft exits on driver side. On AD conversions they used the dana 24 . later Half ton used this style and 3/4 tons and 1 tons used dana 23s and passenger side front drive shaft.
My current front axle is passenger side drive shaft. My dana 24 will not work in this configuration as far as I know.
So onto my search for another option for divorced transfer case.
I find the np205. Commonly used in GM . Very durable. Many custom and after market options. If I find 2x Dana 23s I would be in awesome shape.

I love my friends...
I go to a birthday party at a friends farm. It is one of the places we all ride our 4x4's.
I was at the party 20 minutes and after the second person asked how my truck was making out , and I informed them I need a different transfer case, the second guy tells me he has a divorced np205 for me. Lil while later we worked out a deal. 2 late 50's international truck doors w glass. I dont even have a international. Someone gave them to me because they confused them for chevy doors. He has 3 international trucks, 1 is a napco. Love that truck.
So today at some point I need to,
1 get a ride back to the farm to get my Denali truck. No drinking and driving.
2 pick up the transfer case... back at it either monday night or tuesday day.

I will be editing this thread over tonight and tomorrow. New links will be posted , and I will be filling in some pics I missed.
I try to be detail oriented , so this thread is not just for you guys and my ego. I use it to keep track of what I have done and how I did it , and to keep myself on track. This way when something breaks , there is info on what parts were used or modified etc.
Granted I do appreciate the support , and any advise given. And I love to share the things I build.
keep coming back and checking it out , as things change fast for me and this old truck.

Pete and Tim Lederman (helping) did a lot of work to move those pictures from one hosting site (not a nice one) to the Drop Box. They had a lot of links to fix! So, I appreciate Pete's tenacity so that everyone can get a good LOOK at his work!

And thanks to Tim for helping out.

Steering column bolted into postion.

steering column 2

Underdash view

Underdash passenger side Notice the brake pedal swinging off the original unmodified 1987 column/dash bracket .

Temporary plate for mock up. holds every thing in place. Notice I made a mistake with where my mounting holes where supposed to be. But I am plating both sides . The bracket for the column and pedal is offset to the driver side, I forgot this when first marking the holes and centered it on the column. mistake. To compensate for the offset I mounted the bracket to passenger side with the wheel centered between gauges. It sits lower under the dash then I originally planned but I will not have to change the radius of the original dash.

The next picture is the Power steering box bolted through 1 of the original lever shock holes Ill show more details on this later. I was not camera man today , so I didnt not get all the shots I wanted.
The cutout in the inner fender was not necessary , I need to put a patch panel in there for rust repair.
I used the original spacers from the 87 chevy power steering box . I also connected the 1987 drag link to the original 87 pitman arm.
power steering box

One thing I have learned from scavenging parts from cars/trucks , is take more than you need. Take every thing that comes with the system your working on. Doing motor swap, take everything wires/hoses still attached. My case I took everything for the braking system. Everything for steering. Everything for transmission shifting linkage. Somethings I wanted to take but couldn't. Like drive shafts. I was able to reuse so much. Granted I will have to rebuild a lot of parts, but at least they are stock parts , not buying new custom pieces.

Swapped the Dana 24 for my buddies NP205 today too. not installed just made the trade.

Note: NP205 I have has mechanical speedo.

Pete,

A good idea to take more than you need and everything that goes with your system. Where in the world do you put it all? And better yet: how do you find it later (a problem that some people I know have). grin

Good job on the pix swap. Thanks much!

As far as where I put it all, well I have a 1 ton panel truck with a massive bed. Everything but the axles went inside the truck until I needed them. The rear seat is in the 3rd bay of the shop , and we use it to take "safety meeting breaks".
As I pull parts off , I bring them to storage at my mothers house.

Hmm. I wonder if Tim can run a link-checker and that would pop up any that are broken in the thread. I have been using this one for a long time. Maybe there is a better one. But it sure would save time from having to check each link.

Ahhhhhhh ... thank goodness for Mothers!!! grin

I found out tonight that on TF trucks the 322 V8 was offered in 57. The 322 (5.3L) was a Buick motor re-purposed for truck use.
So putting Buick motors in chevy trucks is not that crazy.

Also I have noticed , that there is one other 1 ton AD panel out there converted to 4x4 using similar parts . It was on youtube for a long time. It has since been sold and no other pics/vidoes have come out featuring the truck in a long time. As far as I can tell that was the only one I can find on the web. Granted I have seen TF trucks 4x4 like crazy, and 3100 pickups from AD, but then again how many 1 ton panels are left out there really? I bet I am the only deluxe 1 ton 4x4.

Late night tonight. I started fabricating my brackets for extra shackle support , but ran out of wire for welder.
So onto the steering I went. No sense wasting a good night, at least it was nice and cool.
I'll update these tomorrow.
Steering column connected

universals installed.

Thanks a lot Achipmunk .
In my own head I keep thinking that I am behind schedule. Even though I don't really have one. The more progress I make, the more I want to get done.

Fullmoon helped a lil last night. Had to quit when the bugs started taking my tools. lol grin Sure you southerners can relate to that.

Since I have the inner fender off and the fender brace, I am going to run my Electrolysis tank this weekend. I have plenty of parts to run through it. I might get the rest of the front clip dipped. we'll see how much I can fit at once and how well it all cleans up.

Grrrr.... setbacks...
first I have been having financial troubles , so I have been forced to take on extra work. Not much time for truck stuff.
I ran my tank over the weekend. It leaked bad. So upon checking the tank in the morning , it was almost empty. So most of the rust suspended in the water , adhered to the fender and caused surface rust to form. The area of the fender that was still in the water was clean but the part that was left to open air has to be re-dipped. No big deal really , just an extra dip in the tank. Problem is that I have to repair my tank.
I took some pics and video of this adventure and will upload them later after I find the leak, repair it and run it again. I will show before , during , after leak , and after re-dipping.

I have been working with this kid and we have been riding in his truck for work lately. well all he listens to is country. I heard this lil gem and it choked me up a lil. I wish I could drive my fathers truck right now.
It also made me realize that I still call my truck, my dads truck.

CL score. BOP bell and most of the clutch parts. Everything lined up great, with only a slight mod needed on the 4 speed.
BOP bell and SM420

Clutch fork for BOP and stock bop throwout bering .

Holes line up.

Grinding needed here. only modification needed.

Notes on parts: the 10 3/4 stock 49 clutch will fit the 11" flywheel.... I will be ordering a centerforce 11" coarse spline clutch. Standard GM parts for throw out bearing and clutch. Pilot bushing is buick/gm part : BCA Bearing Pilot Bearings PB656HD
problem: balancing... I need to balance match my flexplate to my flywheel.

More clutch work today.
Had helpers... Helper 1

helper 2

Bellhousing compare

Left 1949 truck thowout bearing, right buick
Buick throwout bearing

1949 truck throwout bearing

1949 truck throwout bearing and fork. No clip on this fork.

1949 fork with partial linkage

B.O.P. fork

New Buick clutch fork and 1949 linkage
brand new B.O.P. fork with clip. 1949 truck throwout bearing

Last part to figure out is the pilot bushing.
It took a lil time and trial and error but I got it figured out. Tranny mounts left... and I dont know , I am sure I am forgetting something.
I think its cool I can reuse the original pedal and linkage.

note: rear end : 14 bolt does not have 3.08:1 replacement. No match to front 87 axle.
Also did some driveline calculations. 31" tires, with 3.08:1 with np205 and sm420 will work out just fine.
1st gear (granny) will be off road use only.
2nd gear will be used like a 1st gear. @ 3.58 its still bigger than 1st on th400.
3rd @1.71 is slightly larger than 2nd on th400.
4th is 1:1 and is just like 3rd on th400.
I think combine the low end trq. of 455 with this driveline , I should do just fine both on and off the road.

I just had an option put in front of me I really need to consider.

Right now I am using a 1/2 front and my rear is still 1 ton 8 lug 14 bolt.
I have a chance to get a dana 60 front . With 4.10's I believe. I am unsure of the width of this axle... but at this point I dont think it will matter much.
I can get matching gears say 3.73 summit part 14 bolt for both the 14 and the dana( summit dana 3.73 ) and have all 1 ton axles and etc. Or swap just the rear gears to summit 14 bolt 4.10 to match dana front.
Pros n cons
14 bolt pros ... keep rear drive line intact no modification needed. Short shaft needs shortening for transfer case install.
This modification is needed on both swaps.
Con.. chance of breaking original equipment... maybe...
Cost for rebuilding breaks etc is more expensive.
Con... weight . added weight in both front and rear.
Pro... way stronger axles...
Pro ... Matches the chassis.
Con... I would have to do the front axle swap again.
Con ...8 lug wheels... I have multiple sets of 6 lug truck wheels. Including a set of 20"s. No 8 lug that fit right now. But the set I had test fit before would fit the dana. GM late model 2500 chevy stockies.
Con for 1/2 ton ... I have to rebuild that axle... might not have to do internals but u joints and brakes and maybe lockers.
Lockers.... manual on dana 60... auto lock on 1/2 ton. can be a pro or a con... the auto lock can be trouble some but getting out to lock the hubs can be a pain in the but.
I would rather have lockers but if I have to rebuild 1/2 ton axle I would install manual lockers. maybe air lock...hmmmmm.
Track/axle widths are the same on either 1/2 or 1 ton ... everything might line up close to the same. Pitman , drag link etc. Passenger side drive shaft.

Also I got my bed rebuild started... Local bolter is hooking me up with some strips and I just recovered a bunch of douglas fir from a camp in the Adirondacks . I have a guy who does beautiful wood work , who wants 2 favors from me , so he is doing my wood for me.
Custom metal framed wood running boards coming also. These will be installed to not destroy the one good running board I have.

Got some wicked news. Being a tattoo artist, I have a lot of artistic friends. One of my friends is a portrait wood burner. I contacted him and he is going to do a portrait of my father on my wood running boards.

I all ways take lots of pics. I am thinking about doing my father on one side and my mother on the other. Since they rode across the country together in it.

This is just a preview of whats to come. once I get towards finish end of the truck I have some really special plans.
I am pretty good with DC voltage and creating interesting things.
With out spoiling surprise , I will give you a hint...
HVAC w/o a compressor or taking away HP from the motor.

Lately I have been working a lot , not something I am happy about. I would much rather be doing something on my truck. Thinking Sunday.
Cant remember where my sand blaster is... thinking my friends barn... I hope its there.

Ok , I would really appreciate opinions on this....
In case you dont know, I just picked a 1957 3800 pick up long bed. Mostly original , and I got the 235 running fairly well.
This build on the panel has gotten pretty crazy.
I am thinking about taking running 235 out of 1957 pick up , put it in the panel truck....
Then put the 455 in the rat rod pick up. Sleeper Farm truck style.
Before I got everything ready to put 455 in panel , I had been looking for a 1957 235. Makes more sense to have the family capable vehicle with straight 6 and be closer to original. Most people swap 216 out for 235s anyways.
This would also speed up the build on the panel and get it moving on its own power for the first time since I was a lil boy....
Also there is some friction starting between the shop owner and myself, and before it affects our friendship, I am thinking about getting it out of there asap.
I wish I had those fentons still.
Keep power steering , put stock rebuilt axle back under. I might keep 4x4. Get a new drag link and the adapter piece, not much investment there. mod the gauges for 12v etc....
Then for the Tf pick up, build a sleeper farm truck...
What do you guys think?

and I have gone a complete different direction, using Scott Danforth's x-member w/a stock stretched 3/4ton frame. It's still far from done, but I have accumulated all the new front suspension parts I need to put it together. And almost daily I have the USPS, UPS & Fed X knocking on my door with parts thumbs_up , the puzzle is about ready to be put together. Now all I need is help, but my brother & his son said they'd lend me a hand. They're going to hate me when I'm done, lololololol...

Today is the day the panel switches shops. I think its better for everyone this way.
To get the panel on the flatbed , I need to wrap up the shackle work on passenger side real quick this morning. So I will have some new pics after I get moved today.

So as far as I can tell no original parts were taken. only hot rod parts. list goes as fallows:
my spare 70 455 buick big block.
my th400 bop.
my 1987 chevy rear end.
and all the 4 speed tranny parts including the 49 throw out bearing. 11" clutch , pressure plate and bop bell housing.

Thanks everyone for your support.
I am just going to redirect my energy . My 57 is going get driven before winter. Its not going to take much work to get it road worthy. Right now I need a win for my soul.
The panel will probably get its stock front axle put back under her. When I went to move the panel the front 4x4 axle was locked up bad on one wheel.
So I am thinking about returning this big ol girl back to stock with the 57's 235 in it. But first I want to drive the 57 before she gets a big block. I am thinking about holding off on the panel until I can afford to bring her back right.
I can get my hot rod fix on the 57 and not feel guilty. If you look back at the beginning of this thread , I said how until I find a suitable 235 to replace the bad 216, I was planning on 455 install. Well I have a suitable 235 now, So I will stick to that plan.

Side note: all my picture hording came in handy with the police report , as I had casting numbers etc.

Personal note: My trust has been broken and I am not ready to take any risks right now. But I will make big come back and raise the pirate flag high up pole.

Pete, did you ever get straight on this? Curious as to how you came out. Son has a 1949 panel we are working on. Checked out the pictures we could see on the HAMB. She looks familiar! Even if she's kind of a big girl trying on that 3100 hood for size!

Just here for the free beer.
