As many know, at Homecoming one of the major projects was a rear end swap on Old Charlie. The Stovebolt flagship truck.

Since then, John has enjoyed time in the left lane PASSING traffic.

With higher speeds, it will show other areas of the truck that needs updating. In John's case he had a leaky carb.

John decided to have his carb rebuilt. He can give all the specifics but Charlie was offline so to speak.

My youngest son Rocket and I went to HQ to put a spare carb I have so Charlie could still be driven. When we went to install we found that Babbitt 235's have the same carb spacing as a 216 so my carb wouldn't work.

John grabs his phone calls Mike B. Mike has a garage larger than some homes but no carb to fit.

John then calls Mike Roache. He had a 216 as a spare and not only had a carb, but the same Carter W-1 Charlie did.

We snatch it and installed on Charlie and presto! Running truck again!

Thanks to Mikey for saving the day! Goes to show you can alway rely on your brothers in a time of need!!

Indeed, Brothers! Did a shakedown cruise yesterday -- cruised to the BP in Mechanicsville to top off with some nice Gulf of Mexico protroleum products -- none of which went anywhere they weren't supposed to.

Mike -- The other amazing factoid ... GM put the W-1's on the 216's and the splasher 235's over a number of years. We all know that. But here's where it gets all Twilight Zone ... the last year for the W-1 was ... 1949. And the '49 W-1's are unique from all the other W-1's ... Can you guess what's coming??

That carb you lent me is actually one of those unique '49 W-1's!! It's even correct for Charlie!

Yes, this is one of those moments where we can all proudly stand infront of our junk collections (puffing out our chests in sweet vindication to a sceptical significant other) and say "HA!!!!!"

Brothers Roache and Sweet -- Many thanks and kudos to both of you. In honor of your selfless acts of mechanical derring do in service of Stovebolt (including fending off a surprise driveby heckling by the Toddyman himself!), I will allow both of you to buy me beer. smile

Brother Chris -- Indeed, upon your return from down range, you do need to get that truck done and join us! At that time, you may also buy me beer. smile

.... I'll let that sink in ...

So the rest of the story ... why the urgency to return Charlie to an "Up" status and RFI? Charlie has been cast in a TV production and we will be in Frederick, MD for a shoot Tuesday.

smile

Seriously, thanks all for the assist. It will be I who supplies at least the next first round at DB for the brothers involved.

Yr Obt svt,
J Crosby

Similar story,

On a long trip in my 3800 pickup we happened by a car show in Helena Montana, registered, and hung out for the day. A guy with a nice Ford Mustang parked close to us and eventually asked "do you need a carburetor?"
Interestingly enough it had some issues and just the day before I pulled the carb apart on the fender...

He took me over to his house, pulled one of two rebuilt and shrink wrapped Rochesters off the shelf and handed it to me. Before the show was over I had swapped throttle bodies (different bolt spacing) and was back running very well.

We had by far the most unkempt and "ugly" truck at a show full of fancy and well painted cars, it was fun.

I will be drinking beer while working on my truck. Hence i will give out beer to anyone that wants to help. There will probably be lots of beer once she gets rolling again also. Did i mention that there is always beer or Gentlemen Jack on hand.

Good deal on the spare, the only problem with hoarding spares is finding the one item you know you have before you order or scrounge another.
