My boys picked up a project 55 this weekend. They are going to restore it as fast as they can for extra college funding. They have started the tear down already

if you mean the boys are intending to make a profit off a "restoration", you need to point out they're into a lesson on economics

...I think the boys have been watching too many episodes of Wheeler Dealers.

only way you can net a profit is to buy low and flip at slightly higher price. Once you start "improving" it, you go down the rabbit hole. I successfully "flipped" a Corvair once, but money made was not worth the effort.

It is a good project base for sure. Hey, guys, don't knock the kids for trying. We have no idea what they paid for it, what their plans are as a "restoration" or what the market is they're aiming for. Go at it boys.

The boys have finished stripping the frame and are onto painting it now.

We will see about the profit comments? If they don't make any, then they will have learned a ton. I am putting money on them making some profit

I'd put money on them ending up fighting each other for who gets to keep it!

They can always work & make money... they won't always be able to find a 55 truck with that good of a body.

A - They will probably both be out of college before the restoration is complete if they do it properly. (Assuming they are not stopping classes to work full time on the project)

B- From the pictures you can see that it's going to take a lot of $$ to restore.

As a hobby I say go for it, they'll get more enjoyment for the buck than anything else I know. As a business to make money - I think they'd make more flipping burgers than trying to restore and flip this truck.

Amateur repairs do not bring the high dollar sales they are envisioning.

Yes, I am in the camp that thinks the boys are doing it for you and you WILL ensure they make a profit on their efforts. Good job!

No, they are doing it for themselves. They work pretty well together. I do body and paint work on classic cars,so I will guide them through it. They have done all their research on parts and materials. I'm more worried about their getting it done before they leave for college.

Two upgrades they are making are disc brakes up front and new wiring harness. All the panels are good on the truck and will need very little for bodywork. All glass is good, except front glass. Seat is good. Will need tires and rims. Fuel tank was cleaned and ready to go (before they got it). The truck is almost stipped before they got it.

regardless of making money or losing money, the best part is they are not letting idle minds be the devils' workshop! They're around the house and not out into who knows what!

My wife and I also like that they are staying out of trouble. They are both getting degrees in business and this will do them both a lot of good. They are learning a lot about researching prices for parts and how to do the work.

I should be able to get a picture of the frame sanded down and painted today. Looking for a quality disc brake kit, but economical.
