Any tips on how to free it up so I can remove the drum?
I will be replacing all the brake lines and possibly some of the cylinders. I have seen the part #s on the GMC 550 post, are those parts listed available in Canada? | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,061 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,061 | Hy Greengrass, Lordco has some of those parts in stock, and could probably get what they don't already have in stock, hope that helps. | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 70 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 70 | Thanks Bobb, next time I'm at Lordco I'll ask them. I did get all my 347 V8 ignition parts from Lordco, they had most parts in stock and only needed to order the dist. cap. | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 2,544 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 2,544 | Sometimes you can remove the axle and then take the outer bearing out, then you can get enough movement to get the drum and hub off. | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 70 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 70 | Thanks Don, I'll give that a try. | | | | Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 1,159 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 1,159 | Have you tried to back the "Star adjuster" to the "Max".? We did this on the Viking 60 bus,and with a little coaxing from a 10# sledge,we got them off. The hub formed a ridge around the outer circumference, and we had to clear that ridge. Hope this helps.

Jacked it up, pulled the wheels, removed the axles and outer bearings. Then, I took some 1/2" socket extensions and worked them into the opposite axle. Once seated against the axle, I had a crowsfoot puller (the kind you use to pull a harmonic balancer) that just fit into the bolt pattern of the drum and cranked it up hard, used a big hammer and after a bit, they finally walked off. Fun job. | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 70 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 70 | Thanks WetWilly and Mr. Olds88, I will try all these things. My truck has Daytons and I was hoping to free up the brakes without removing the wheels but I think that will be the only solution. | | |
